I too have wondered what changed. It's gotten tiring though. I said it this offseason and I'll say it again-This team is close but our refusal to be active in Free Agency is absolutely killing us and may ruin what could have been a promising year.

Until we fundamentally change our approach to team building, I have zero confidence in our front offices ability to assemble a team which can consistently compete at the highest level. It's really really depressing because we've been handed a gift the likes of which most franchises see only a few times a generation, and I think we are going to squander it. We already talk about where smitty would rank among WRs if he had real QBs throwing to him during his prime, 10 years from now we may be talking about how much Cam Newton could have accomplished if he had been in a better situation.

Sadly we can't sign any quality free agents if we wanted to, most of out $ is tied up in the same positions mainly Linebackers and Runnining Backs. Who builds a team constantly loading up at the same position, one (running back) that is no longer a premium in the NFL. What do we do though go out sign one big free agent running back (Tolbert), resign another to a long term deal (Stewart) in the offseason only a year after we over paid an aging running back (D. Williams). I don't hate Hurney, but think about it people it just dosn't make any sense! I mean in a dream world we could have resigned Stewart, let Deangelo Walk, never have signed Tolbert, and used the money on Deanglo and Tolbert and signed Johnathon Joseph and Vincent Jackson. We would have probably had Poole as a back up RB, but that would be ok considering playmakers we would have had at other postiions! IDK just one way to think about it, just a really frustrated fan (Like all of us) after waiting all offseason and then having to watch that crap!

Instead of Cam? Or instead of Kuechley? That would make us better at DT but probably not better overall.

there is no problem with building through the draft...but you have to occasionally make a splash in FA

I don't think building from the draft is bad but investing most of the cap in two positions is not smart IMO. At some point we are going to need a CB or T and we will need cap to do that.
