You can do whatever you want. It just cheapens the experience for those who do have the aforementioned connections. I know plenty of Chapel Hill students/alumni who are embarassed at how the most vocal and obnoxious members of their fanbase are the bandwagon jumpers who were nowhere to be found during the Matt Doherty days. And that these same fans could care less about UNC football and refer to themselves as "We" when talking about a team like Florida, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc. again, with no connection to them whatsoever. Just picking whoever the front running team is at the time.

It's a bit different with pro teams. The Panthers are the only NFL franchise in the Carolinas. They also are not a team that is constantly jerked off by the media, like the Cowboys. Which is why you see a lot of Cowboys fans who know nothing about the team other than the fact that they won 5 Super Bowls. I know that if the Panthers win a Super Bowl, I'm not going to want to be associated with those kinds of fans.

like i said, small minded.

"you can't be a fan and i don't want you to be a fan of my team because you never went there" blah...who cares what those people think? friggin elitists. i'm going to like who i want to like and so should anyone else. who cares what any snobs say?

those people you are turning away and saying "cheapens" their experience are all potential future students and, if they live in NC, are paying for that school to exist.

dodge number four...some kind of record I think. Please continue to go on and on about the sub-levels and bylaws of your maniacal statement without telling us the basis of the charge. That is a real way to earn credibility there.

lmao at clown boi

You've dodged all of my questions and assertions too, and resorted to name calling and being an internet tough guy. Pardon me if I don't feel the need to continue this "discussion" (if you want to call it that). Also, I'm really enjoying you, the ulitmate troll, now being the judge of credibility.

listen kiddo. You used a term that I did not understand. I asked you about it and you still have yet to answer it in a way that makes sense. Yet you want to discuss the applications of it and convince people that you know when and where it applies. The problem is that IT has yet to be explained in a way that makes legitimate sense. If I have been asked a question and have not responded to your satisfaction please re ask it as I have done for you here and you will get an intelligent answer.

If you don't know what you are talking about simply SHUT THE FVCK UP!

it's that easy.

This thread has turned into the discussion that has already been covered on the huddle and which is linked below. Rather than rehash opinions which would seem plagiarized, you can see the back and forth here if you would like.

People who didn't go to school there, weren't from the Chapel Hill area, just picked them because they were the best/most popular team when they started watching basketball. Similar concept to front running.

I remember a caller in the Raleigh area saying that "you shouldn't be rooting for a college team where you didn't attend that school." He never expanded on that because that exact statement was his belief.

I was blown away by this statement.

Nothing directed towards you X-Clown.. Was just amazed someone actually called in with that take.

I was blown away by this statement. Majority of fans never go to the school. So what the guy was saying is, a person that never went to college and went a different route can't root for ANY college team because ... well, he didn't go to college.

My dad didn't go to college at all... He's a state fan. Now, because their win-loss record is below average, is it okay to be a fan? Is there some double standard out there?

I just find it funny to hear this angle taken on whether your a fan or not.

Nothing really directed towards you X-Clown... I get your angle, which is just to degrade people who hop on the bandwagon..

That bandwagon applies to all teams though... Even State fans jump on that wagon in the Raleigh area just because all their friends are fans or majority of fans live in this area.

It depends on why your dad chose to be a State fan I suppose. And also if he is a fan of all things State or whether it's State for football/basketball and then another school for another sport. I suspect it was a better reason than "It was the best team and was winning when I was looking for basketball teams to choose." Because if that's the case, he probably would have jumped off the bandwagon long ago to look for another winning team to support. It would make sense for the people you mention who are living in or are from the Raleigh area to be NC State fans.

Fandom comes in all shapes and sizes with all kind of fans. Bandwagon fans while not as diehard or as loyal as those who stick it out through the lean times are still fans and embraced by the team while they last. Most fans of any popular college team in any state didn't actually go there. When I lived in Pennsylvania it was Penn State, in Kentucky obviously it was Kentucky, here it is mostly State, Carolina, and Duke. It is the same anywhere you go.

Everyone has a definition of what a true fan really is and they vary a lot. Just like people on the huddle could call you a "Johnny come lately" because you weren't here 5 years ago. Doesn't change the validity of your arguments or make you any less of a Huddle fan.

just sayin...........
