It's difficult because it's almost a no-win situation. If you panic and sign a vet kicker but still start Medlock, it could mess with his mojo and he'd still miss kicks. But if you express confidence and only go with him, and then he misses a couple of crucial FGs in the first game or two, then the coaching staff looks like idiots for going into a critical season with high expectations with an unproven journeyman kicker.

Can't wait to re visit this thread when games actually count. When our punter is kickIng it over people's heads, when Adams is returning punts for TD's, and that defense is a turnover machine. This will be a good thread to re-read

Agreed. Kickers are usually rented or leased. It is rare to own one like we did Kasay for so many years.

Didn't watch the game, but the two misses are listed as 50 and 56 yards. Probably not going to be kicking any 56 yarders in a real game, but he should be making those 50 yarders. How bad did he miss them?

This. Misses from 50 and 56 aren't concerns of mine. He hit it from 31, which wouldn't have been guaranteed with Mare. Even the fact that we could attempt 50+ yard kicks is impressive.

Just went back and watched his first kick again too while Hurney was on. I'm not worried. I think the staff and front office are fully behind him and that confidence will carry over into his performance.

That being said, it's clear that he is REALLY hard on himself when he misses. He was still scrunching his face up and shaking his head a full drive after he missed on the first one. When he missed the second one, he hung his head immediately and looked distraught.

Additionally, Hurney said he is 'very detailed...' I think that approach can often times cause problems mentally in one's performance, but when they get it right, they get it right.

We all appreciate the fact that you looked at it again. Also appreciate your analysis. I'm not worried. There will come a time where RR wants to punt from that distance and Medlock will be right there begging him to let him take that kick... That right there is what u want from a kicker. Mare never fuggin did that

All that matters is that he works even harder to prove himself. He knows the leash is short in the NFL.
