XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Luke Cage

Anybody stoked for the remake of the classic turn based tactical strategy game X-Com? 2k released a 1 hour gameplay vid today: http://www.twitch.tv/2k/b/330155062

This remake looks really freaking legit (unlike other crappy X-Com remakes). Also another decent looking X-Com remake is Xenonauts which is being released by an indie company. They have a demo out for it, but the game isn't even really in alpha stage yet. Both games are being released around the same time and I'm getting both. Any other X-Com nerds out there?

I finally had a chance to play it and it is great. I'm only a few hours into it but the aliens that look like they're from Starship Troopers surprised me. Lost an entire unit when I first ran into them. Fought them a second time in another mission and had to change my tactics because those guys don't care if you're behind cover.

I have this on Steam but I haven't got around to playing it.  The same with about 50 titles lol.

Being an adult sucks, money to buy games but no time to play such games.

It's a sick game man.  There are some bugs, but not as bad as the old game.  The old game is better in some ways, worse in others.

Bad points: In the new game aerial combat is dumbed down and there is literally no flexibility with inventory management.  The new game is also way too short; you can beat in ~30 hours if you know what you are doing.

Good points: Tactical combat is extremely enjoyable (when the bugs don't act up) and realistic.  The different classes allow you to employ realistic squad based tactics i.e. pinning the enemy with suppressing fire from your 'weapons' elements (heavy class) while your grunts (assault troops) close with and destroy the enemy via flanking or direct assault.  Also the sniper class does an excellent job denying the enemy freedom of movement in the open field much like actual snipers in real life.  The Support class also perfectly mimics medics/docs.  There is also a cover mechanic that makes you think about where to put your guys every single turn; you can also destroy cover with grenades, rockets, and certain other weapons to expose aliens to death...unfortunately the same can be done to you.  The whole environment on every map can be remade with explosions.  When you throw in the perks that your troops get to pick when they level up to make them even more deadly, it is awesome (later in the game you get access to psionic powers as well).  And guys die often and have to be replaced by rookies who suck and panic often until they have been leveled up. Even better, it looks like Firaxis is working on a sequel.

I tried the Beta of the other xcom remake xenonauts.....XCOM-EU easily outclasses xenonauts imo.

30 hours is a short game?!?  How much time do you have to play games?

30 hours is short compared to how long it took to beat the original xcom.  That game was epic in scope; I can only play games for about 1 hour a weekday, but games like xcom are meant to be enjoyed.  The old game took about 15 more hours to beat if you rushed it.  I understand that the average gamer has changed quite a lot since the original xcom: ufo defense, but I don't think a longer game would have hurt their profit margin.

    • I don't really like the phrase, "moral victory". I get what's meant by it, but does that mean that if you do the opposite (play poorly but win) it's an immoral victory? 🤔
    • I blame Evero because he is overrated. Vance Joseph created the defense in Denver that he took credit for. Wilks ran the ball down his throat and Darnold had a 103.8 rtg.  Last year we were decent in yards allowed, and horrible in everything else. Only reason? We kept giving up good field position.  He's had his choice of players to bring in since his scheme is so "complicated." Maybe he should stop trying to be so fancy like running Cover 4 on 3rd and 1 earlier and focus on fundamentals like tackling. These years of Eric Washington, Phil Snow, and Evero must have gotten you confused on what a real defense looked like. Go back and watch the McDermott and Wilks years- this dude is sofT.
    • I tried to make it a point in the opening post that I don't think the offense is a finished product. I think we still need more talent at WR, better play calling, catch more consistently, elimate ridiculous penalties,  and be more consistency in scoring points. I'm just saying, they look markedly better than last year imo. They have scored 20 or more in 6 games and 30 or more in 2 games. And that's particularly notable considering they only mustered 10 points and 3 points in first 2 games of this year and they got blanked on 0 points two games in a row to wrap up last season . I'd say that's a market improvement.  I'm not crowning them and saying we have a top 10 offense or anything.  I'm comparing them to themselves in recent history.
