Highly doubt we pick up Cooley, but I look at it like he'd be taking the Brockel/Hartstock position.

I am not saying he'd replace Olsen's or Tolbert's spot but he is much more similar to them. Brockel and especially Hartsock are different types of TEs that offer more in the run game.

I'd be more interested in Cooley if he offered something different than Olsen and Tolbert. Rather spend a roster spot elsewhere.

It has nothing to do with Olsen and Tolbert. It has to do with Brockel and/or Hartsock. If Tolbert went down, I'd feel a lot more comfortable with Cooley than Brockel. If Olsen or Barnidge went down, I'd feel a lot more comfortable with Cooley than Hartsock.

Cooley isn't a pure TE. He's hybrid type FB/HB/TE, very similar to Brockel (only more talented) and could very well help in the run game.

Hartsock ofers nothing at receiving. Cooley is just like Brockel except better.

I know he isn't a pure TE. Hence, I said he's similar to Olsen (a receiving TE) and Tolbert (FB/H-Back) and not like Hartsock (who is your typical block-frst TE). He is similar to Brockel but I think Brockel is more blocking oriented.

I am sure it has something to do with players he is similar too. He has to have a fit in this offense it terms of playing time. I am not sure he will be worth the money he might command if he is second fiddle to Olsen and Tolbert.

If he offered a different skill set than Olsen and Tolbert, it'd make more sense to add him. Unless you have a pessimistic view and think these guys are going to get hurt.

Hartsock overs nothing at receiving. Cooley is just like Brockel except better.

And more expensive. And never said he was good at receiving. He would be used in run sets.

As I said earlier, he's a better receiver than Hartsock and a good to serviceable blocker, and he's better overall than Brockel. So, if we signed him and shifted him between TE and FB, we could open up a roster spot by signing him in place of Hartsock and Brockel. So, technically, we could use the roster spot elsewhere.

Well that's only if we had planned on keeping both Brockel and Hartsock, which I don't think is the case. And can't forget about Barnidge too.

It's not that I don't like Cooley's skill compared to our other TEs, just don't see the fit in terms of bang for your buck.

I assume as it stands, we're going in with Olsen, Barny, Hartsock, and Brockel anyway. As it stands, Hartsock is the only blocking TE we have, so I'm sure they keep him around for specific packages and Brockel is the tweener. So, if we signed Cooley and he was healthy, then he can take over the duties that Hartsock and Brockel are currently being employed for.

Then again, it's entirely possible that we're looking at letting Hartsock and/or Brockel go anyway because I've noticed us using Olsen and Barnidge a lot more out of the backfield. But, I look at it like this, if we keep all four guys capable of playing TE on the current roster, it's a win-win if we can let two go for one guy that can do the same things both of them do combined.

I'm assuming we keep 3 TEs: Olsen, Barnidge, and either Brockel/Hartsock. So I guess I'm not seeing the extra spot saved. I just think it'd be beneficial to keep someone like Hartsock who offers more in the run game then adding Cooley who is clearly better than Brockel and Hartsock but doesn't offer a different game than someone like Olsen or a Tolbert. Just my take.

No, I understand, but I think he is slightly different. I think he's a better blocker than given credit for. And I thought we'd keep all four guys we currently have because we had the 3 of the 4 active last year and Shockey, which made 4 total.
