Blitzes and Pressure

Our defense last night was just as vanilla as it has been for the past two weeks. We did use simple cb blitzes and a few lb blitzes but nothing advanced. Hell we have not even ran stunts that much this preseason. Zone blitzes,stunts, and 3-4 looks is where we will get our pressure from and we showed none of that in game 3. Also to say the jets were a vanilla defense last night was a lie. They were using a mixture of blitzes to confuse Cam.

This will definitely be a good learning game for Amini. Some of those stunts and blitzes he faced were complex. This is the one good thing about preseason. He can watch tape with the coaches and see how 3-4 D's can create pressure.

I haven't been impressedwith our defense in some time. I would love for our defense to be more aggressive; better push in the middle, better rush off the edge, stunt blitzes from the LB'ers, less cushion from our CB's, etc. When we ran the ball, we were getting hit either at or behind the LOS, when the Jets ran the ball they were getting hit after they crossed the LOS and still managed to push for an additional 5 yards at least.

What game were you watching?? We were stopping them for losses as well and had them at 3.2 yards a carry until The Golden Calf of Bristol started running around. Even with The Golden Calf of Bristol lucky scrambles they only had 133 total rushing yards. The Golden Calf of Bristol had 45 of those yards.

i'm about to watch the game again but i don't remember blitzing a whole lot. we did show alot of pressure looks up front but it looked to me like we sent 4 & dropped off into mostly zone coverage after the snap

Yeah, we did give a lot of blitz looks and then dropped off into coverage, but as I said, I find the lack of pressure from just sending 4 consistently extremely concerning. Our entire DL gets pushed wide way too often, leaving the middle open. I don't know if that is by design or what, but I would hope not. As I said, I don't know why we wouldn't try to pinch in on a non-mobile QB when his first preference would be to step up the middle into his throw.

Yeah, I found it questionable when Collinsworth said we gameplanned for the game but Ryan said they refused to show anything they'd use in the regular season... Yet, that one sack they got by stunting the DTs and both inside LBs simultaneously certainly didn't look "vanilla" to me, lol.

Yeah this was probably Amini's worse game to date. Coples ate his lunch a couple of times. I've notice that Amini leaves his area at times to go help out Gross, which is fine, but he vacates his area too soon some times. I remember one passing play were he had Coples blocked, and then he just let Coples go free to go assist Gross. It was almost like he was intentionally trying to chip Coples over to Kalil, so he could go help out Gross. The only problem though, was that Kalil was already engaged with someone, and Coples just went free. I also wonder if it's because he's so use to burying guys with one blow.

I think we're scheduled to play about five 3-4 defensive teams this year. None of which will be as good as the Jets, with their overall pressure, so we should be fine.

Cowboys, Redskins, Charges, Raiders, and Chiefs.

I was going to point out that I don't know how much of it has to do with him facing a 3-4 versus how much of it is that he is a superior run blocker and subpar pass blocker at this point. He definitely has to work on his pass pro but he's good enough to get by for now.

I think that we were watching the same game and yes you're right in that aspect, but my reference was more in the sense of:

• Our CB's giving a lot of cushion to WR'ers, especially on short yardage plays, which all but sures a 1st down conversion.
  
• Our failure to coverage TE's routes in the middle of the field.
  
• Our depressing attempt to push the opposing o-line back to collaspe the QB's pocket.
  

Yes our goaline defense did a very good job and we were able to hold the Jets offense to without a TD. But let's be a bit more realistic, we had help....Sanchez, The Golden Calf of Bristol and Hill. There were a lot of poorly thrown passes and dropped/uncaught passes. I did not like our CB and DB play against the Jets. We more less played a soft zone with cushion from the CB.

So you tell me, were we watching the same game?

You have to give credit to the Jets D as well. There defense especially there secondary is very good and Ryan was cooking up some not so ordinary blitzes. I think it was a good test for our line and they sured things up after the first few drives. Also Amini is a Rookie that IMO has done very well coming from Div 2. Prob want see a better defense this year than the Jets.

Our blitzers run straight into a wall. I don't think we disguise or execute the blitzes well. One huge reason is that our rushers on the line don't force enough double teams. More occupied lineman = more free blitzers. CJ getting blocked one-v-one is ridiculous. We could pay a lot less for that performance. I'm really tired of highly paid DEs being handled by scrub tackles. I was having flashbacks to Peppers.

Hardy isn't looking like a threat as a pass rusher.

He was going solo most of the night against a tackle that gave up three sacks last week. I don't think he even got a pressure.

I believe you're thinking of Wayne Hunter, he was benched this past game.
