The NFL should be lax on this stuff. It helps grow the sport to have the fans involved like that.

They probably would if they could, but if they allow people to do what they want with their material without specific permission, then legally they're likely to lose some rights of control over their own content. If the NFL lost that control over their content then they'd lose potential revenue streams when they wanted to sell those diluted rights to various media companies (or use them to promote their own sites/channels).

I had a Steve Smith video I made that had 50k+ total views deleted back in 2006 when the NFL seemed more aggressive with this stuff. That's just the breaks when you're dealing with other people's copyrighted material, and you should expect it.

If it's a video that's likely to be deleted and you really want to keep it, sites like keepvid.com allow you to download youtube videos.
