Removing the franchise tag from Julius Peppers is the best option.

The right decision was putting on the tag and the right decision is keeping it there. Those who argue against it obviously know little to nothing about business or you wouldn't make an idiotic comment.

Untagging him is essentially giving him away for nothing. That would be like giving your house away because it is less valuable than it once was and you have to sacrifice to make the payments and it is harder to sell.

The smart to thing to do is either get what you can for it or keep it until the value returns or in the case of next year, keep him (the house) until your income stream (cap space) changes in a positive direction (uncapped year). I fully expect that contracts will escalate next year unless a CBA is signed before then and his money won't look at bad as it does right now with the economy in the tank.

Letting him go for cap space when there is no free agent out there worth replacing him with is ridiculous. And anyone who really thinks we can replace him with who we have on the roster or a guy like Robertson knows very little about football. When was the last time a rookie DE like Brown had 10 sacks in his rookie year?

Start thinking with your brain instead of your emotions. The only debacle is what is happening for Peppers not the Panthers. He gambled and lost big time. If he is a man he will come back and swallow his pride. If he is a fool he will hold out and give you something to talk about for the next several months.

:iagree:

One of the most intelligent posts I've read on here for a while, especially regarding Pep being tagged. Luckily these posts only come up a hundred and fifty times a day though...

I think we all know that Pep has a fragile psyche, and it's been said by Pep's teammates that the fans have been harsh on him this offseason, and hopefully he can recover. Pep is a great athlete no doubt, but he is naive to say the least. I think he had it in his mind (maybe by Carey, maybe not) that he really could just request to be let go for nothing, or if tagged, request to be traded to a list of teams of his choosing.

To say that this line of thinking for a professional athlete playing under the rules of the CBA is anything but incredibly naive and childish is just plain foolish. Whether or not you agree with him being tagged or not is another issue.

Maybe we could have made a big splash in free agency. Maybe we could have driven the price higher for a competitor. Maybe we could have drafted the next Tom Brady with the 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick we would get from Peppers' outright release. Maybe I would be rich if I bought Google stock at it's IPO, and MAYBE I will be rich if Twitter has an IPO and I buy as many shares as I can afford.

But Maybe Cutler tears up the Bears locker room with his childish behavior and sets that franchise back 6 years. Maybe Haynesworth gets lazy after receiving his big payday and has Washington fans pissed off at moneybags Snyder for years.

Some people on here are saying there is more to free agency than what NFL.com has listed as notable free agents, but then right after you say you want the Cutler's and the Haynesworths. None of us know what maybe could have happened with this move or that move, and none of us are psychics as to what will happen next year.

I know for me, hindsight is always 20/20. And as a die-hard Carolina Panthers fan, with a team that is returning most of it's starters after a 12-4 season, and what I think was ANOTHER fairly successful draft, I've got no reason to be anything but uber-optimistic about another upcoming season of Panthers football.

pay attention 55. I am not leading anything in this thread and do not agree with the premise set by the OP at all. You are just following me around again and got confused (as usual).

And as far as tagging a player being a business decision, I know. In most cases it is. However in this case there is no way a smart businessman could weigh risk and reward and put us in this situation. He is either an idiot (not inclined to believe) or reacted emotionally.

Haven't you been paying attention?

FIrst of all no one needs to follow you around. You can be found in any Jake or peppers thread or criticizing the FO or Fox. They appear to be your obsessions which is the answer to why you post 100 of times on the same thing. You are obsessed with a few subjects and we all know what they are. you must think either if you say it enough it must be true or are compelled to say the same thing over and over. BTW they make medicine to help with that.

As for Hurney if you thing it was emotional you obviously don't know the meaning of the word which is why you think your threads are rational and not emotional. Hurney is not an emotional guy not are his decisions. If he thought it was the best decision to let him go he would have. Tell me of one other decision Hurney has made emotionally without forethought. if you can't, it stands to reason he didn't suddenly step out of character.

If you agree to stop posting innane threads I promise to stop correcting you and pointing out your obvious defects in rational thought.

Emotional would have been letting him go for nothing. I don't think any of the top 20 execs in the league would have let him walk. You seem to be the emotional one imo. The risk reward is either we get numerous draft picks or the services of a top 5 DE for 2.7 million more than we paid for him the year before. Hurney attempted to sign him to a long term deal prior to this season. Peppers decided he would like to be a FA.

Next year, we see what interest we can drum up from other teams. I doubt with his cap number he would be franchised again, but who knows. I think we will get his best year ever this year. Its in everyones best interest that he performs well. It's not Hurney's fault, it's not Peppers or agents fault, its just business.

Translation: Sh!t Happens. So let's role with the team we got and kick some ass next season.

nice job on the write up Fiz, I completely agree. I said when we had the decision to get Gross or Peppers that we should let Peppers walk. We didn't and here we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

We didn't have to choose we did both. And we are not in a hard place since we weren't going to sign any big name free agents either. We have done that and tried that before without good success. Bottom line is we have Gross and Peppers. Until Peppers holds out there is no reason to beleive he won't be here before the season doing his job for which he will get well paid. The person in the hard place is Peppers. He either has to swallow his pride and play here this year or sit out and lose 17 million dollars with no guarantee of a payday anywhere else either.

he can sit till week 6 (that's the point where he would start to lose money, so he can sign anywhere up to that time period and get the full paycheck for 11 games since our bye week is so early. He can decided to sit till week 10 and get most of the check from us. Nothing we could do about it either, unless we rescinded on the tag. (he'd then be a fa and we lost money that could have gone to picking someone up for an injury or what not or helping out on the dline and fixing our major problem there. (DT pass rush)

Thanks panthers55, I had to goto work so I couldn't play with crolls anymore. :'(

Its a thankless job but someone had to convince visitors to the board that there are sane folks here. If you only read his threads you might think you are on the AFMB.

Not true. He can sit until week 6 and he still will receive full eligibility for the year (which doesn't matter since he has 7 years already). But his salary is reduced by 1 million dollars for every game he misses unless he is injured. If he doesn't sign his tender until game six he gets 10/16s of what he is owed. At least that is what Pat Kirwin said and I believe as a former GM he knows the rules. Where have you read or heard it is different??

Even if he sits for 6 weeks then decides to come play, we will be a disurptive force for us at the end of the season and into the playoffs. I think he will play hard the whole season since it is a contract year, but if he decides to wait a couple games to come back, he will be a tremendous help down the stretch. If he does sit for a few games, everyone will hate him more than they do now, but if he only plays 10 games and gives us double digit sacks and maybe even helps us win the championship...I think fans will forgive

my bad I miss read what I was looking at. He can hold out to game 6 (up till that point the full 17 million tag would be a hit on Carolina, then if he signs it he gets the remaining pay for the rest of the year.
