Removing the franchise tag from Julius Peppers is the best option.

This seems to have gone off topic several pages ago.

Releasing Peppers the best option? Not with what's available. If there was a quality player who would significantly upgrade us then, sure. But that player isn't out there. Dwayne Robertson? Ain't it. He turned down a restructure of his 16 million cap hit with Denver. That's why he was cut. He's going to want to cash in based on the Haynesworth deal. Way too much for a player that would only be part of the rotation. Add the rumors of lingering knee issues and pass, as we've done.

I'd prefer Demarcus Ware, Jared Allen, John Abraham, Aaron Kampman, Osi Umenyiora, or Justin Tuck.

That's because you seem to view DEs primarily as pass rushers (which also seems to be what Peppers wants). But when you add in the complete body of work, things change. Which of those guys is available as a replacement anyway?

The bottom line is the team is willing the spend the money. Those that feel that Jake was extended just to gain cap room haven't been paying attention. Jake was getting an extension PERIOD. The cap room was an added benefit but wasn't the primary goal. I'm not sure that we've made any moves that cut into the space created at all at this point. If there was a player we wanted at the right price, we could create cap room.

Julius Peppers did what he felt was right and is in a safe spot considering the dilemma

Marty Hurney did what he felt was right and has the support of the fans

Both are obviously strong-willed and know a lot more about the actual situation than any of us.

In my opinion Marty failed. Let's see if he can salvage his mistake. I don't care who disagrees. Some good points have been made on both sides. I hope Julius plays his ass off for us and eventually gets what he wants, whatever that is. I hope Marty Hurney does not fvck up like this again in the near future. But I'm not holding my breath on either.

Good observations.

Robertson is a name that hasn't come up for a while (here or anywhere else).

Can you explain this in 20 words or less? Even if you don't think Peppers is worth the price, it's obvious the team does including coaches and FO (Hurney included). Hurney isn't a one man show.

I realize that others work in the department but he is the boss. Gets all the praise and all the blame on personnel decisons.

But he too has bosses to whom he is accountable. If you're as pissed as you seem toward Hurney for these actions, then you must be equally or even more pissed at those that allow him to continue. They could have easily told him to do otherwise or else.

I thought you made a great point there... and then all the rest is just speculation as you said.. You know nothing more than anyone else. As are your own words... And I can agree to that, we (you and everyone else) know nothing more of the situation and therefore could turn out to be the greatest decision in franchise history... Then again, maybe not. Who knows? Me? No. You? No. Because none of us have hindsight... Only speculation.

Just thought it was interesting how you threw in that last paragraph...

How many bosses do the GM have? How many of them are hired to police him in making roster decisions?

2 Richardsons, Jerry and Mark. (Jon is over the stadium)

Are you trying to say that they are so detached from the organization that they don't know what's going on?

No not at all but a GM is hired for a reason and the people he reports to aren't wanting to be involved in the daily dirt that much. Jus sayin.

The guy is accountable for this. It is already bad for both sides. Both sides are playing difficult. There is no win in this situation.

I don't think it's as bad as everyone is making it out to be. One guy wants out, the GM franchised him. After that, noone has spoken a word. If it was "bad', I would expect a TO type retaliation more so than a "going into a shell" response. Those actions lean more that way in my view than anything being "bad".

If it's that "bad", we will see Pep sit out when the season starts. If not, then it was never that bad after all.
