The Panthers are coming off a six-win season in which they went 4-2 down the stretch. Not bad for a team that went 2-14 the previous season and, coming off the lockout shortened off-season, was acclimating to a virtually all-new coaching staff. That staff, led by Ron Rivera, has now had more than a calendar year to install its systems.

More important, the Panthers have had a year to groom their young franchise quarterback. Not only does the sky seem to be the limit for Cam Newton, 23, but he is surprisingly close to the clouds already (more on that in a moment). The Panthers had the No. 5-ranked scoring offense last season. So, reason says, a healthier defense that can at least be average (it was well below that in 2011, ranking 27th in points and 28th in yards) should make this club a postseason contender, right?

Says we very well could be a legit playoff contender, but calls us 3rd in NFCS.

Not sure about the prediction, but probably one of the most knowledgable, well written articles on our team I have seen in years.

I think that this isn't totally an out of bounds prediction. Although I think we all feel that we can be 1st or 2nd and we definitely can, but there will no doubt, in my opinion, be like a 2 game difference between 1st place and 3rd place in the division.

Not a bad article at all. We could be 3rd in the division or 1st just like last year we were about 15 plays the ENTIRE season from being in the playoffs, the same stakes are present this year but with it lessened to about 10 plays are way instead of 15. Aside from the prediction the writer was very knowledgeable about our team. Good read.

A fair assessment but seems to be a bit pretentious. As are most ny times writers. We will go as Cam goes. So predictions are unmerited at this point.
