weight loss

Seriously, track your calories.

Set a REALISTIC daily goal for your calories, like 1600 or so.

Drink water.

The healthy choice meals at the supermarket are very low calorie, like 400 or so.

One of those for lunch with a glass of water and you are pretty much home free budget wise.

You stick within your calorie limit and you WILL lose weight, simple as that.

You cheat and rationalize a splurge here and there and you will cancel out all your previous effort so keep that in mind.

It's all about discipline.

I agree with everything except this....

if you don't allow yourself little cheats here and there...you're only setting yourself up for failure. If you want a chicken wing..eat a wing...not 20 mind you..but eat 6...just know your ass better work it off the next day...

Now don't do this all the time..but seriously..eat a fuging wing..enjoy it..savor it...just know you need to go back

it's a lifestyle change..not a temporary change...the minute you understand that..you'll lose weight

I never stopped eating wings or french fries...I just didit here and there and not all the time....and I was at the gym 4 days a week

About 15 yrs ago I went on a light beer diet. No breakfast or lunch, just beer. Eating was the last thing I would do at night if I didn't pass out first. I lost a huge amount of weight. Everyone wanted to know my secret. It's a wonder it didn't kill me.

(BTW don't try this at home)

Yeah you need a cheat day once every 7-10 days depending on how long you can last without it. Having a cheat day and eating a decent amount or a couple bad things makes your metabolism "overreact" to what its become accustomed to on the diet days, and when you return to the diet the next day, you burn things faster. In the words of Ron Burgundy...it's science.

That's the most important thing said in this thread. If you don't change your lifestyle, you're doomed before you begin.

FWIW, the Paleo diet works for me.

No, and I wish people would stop spreading this baloney. It'll take a 2 mile run to burn off a snickers bar - imagine what 3 square meals a day would require. Completely unrealistic.

Just start with the basics for now - avoid sodas and other sweetened drinks. For dessert, go with cottage cheese + pineapple. Avoid fried foods. A few meats you can substitute in - flank and sirloin steaks, salmon, ground turkey, turkey bacon etc.

Most foods aren't "bad" for you per se, but how they are prepared makes a world of difference.

Baloney? lol

Nickzz is right. Burn more calories throughout the day than you take in. Add in some exercise if you want to lose it faster.

Fiber Cereal for breakfast

Lean Cuisine/frozen low calorie deal for lunch

Apple for snack

Lean meat like chicken breast with two veggies instead of rice/potatoes/bread for dinner

Only drink one cup of black coffee per day, and rest of the time water.

If you eat salads don't get creamy dressings...oil and vinegar is good.

Cut out fast food, soft drinks, and as many carbs as you can stand.

You will start losing lbs. Slowly but steadily.

The only way I'm wrong is if he's only interested in having a lower weight. I'm under the assumption that he wants to lose excess fat. You don't lose fat by starving yourself. When you do that, your body retains a higher portion of what you eat for fat preserves and uses less nutrients that make your body function properly. Our body is designed (or evolved, for some of you) for survival - we can go a long time without eating. Storing fat is a big priority for human bodies.

I know you like scientific literature and peer reviewed articles. Show me just one that agrees a low calorie diet not only burns fat, but is healthy. I've seen plenty that warn about the loss of muscle mass and bone density... while the body stores more fat.

Eating more often I suppose. Instead of 3 meals I'm eating around 5-6, in small portions. Like a glass of milk with a banana in the early morning, an apple with water a couple of hours later. A good lunch, peanuts a couple of hours later with water, Another fruit or jelly or soemthing, then supper.

Ahh, yes... Gotcha. Eating 5-6 meals per day vs 3 is very good for you, esp if you're trying to lose weight. I've been doing that for at least a year now, smaller portions at meals and healthy snacks between. I'm not really trying to lose weight per se, just keep/put on muscle and lose fat. I'm down 3 belt loops in the past year and still right at 215.
