West Nile Virus

Could become an epidemic... and there is a chance I've got it... ugh...

Last Tuesday evening, I started having some flu like symptoms... mainly achy joints and muscles and a fever of 102 that came out of nowhere...

Wednesday I still went to work, and didn't really feel all that bad other than a little sore like I had been working out... but that night, the fever and aches jumped back on my again pretty fierce...

I went to work Thursday, and felt fine... still a little achy in the joints, but otherwise alright... Thursday evening, BOOM fever of 103 (that I think actually peaked in the 105 range while I was asleep) sore all over... no other symptoms really... I did toss and turn all night, and woke up about 3 AM thirsty as a sumbitch and freezing from the fever... then I woke up at 5 AM soaked in sweat from the fever peaking and breaking... when I got up again at 6:45, my throat was a little scratchy, but I felt feverless...

Called in sick and went to the doctor... Of course, they check my temp and it is normal... Doc says my throat is a little irritated and wants to do a strep test... that comes back negative... He says that it could be some sort of flu bug, but that West Nile is a growing concern... I remember getting eaten up by mosquitoes the previous weekend, so this isn't comforting... He gives me a scrip for a Zpack and tells me if the fever peaks higher than 103 again I probably need to go to the ER...

Yesterday evening, I felt the fever and aches creeping back on... I hit above 103, but said I'd try to tough it out going into the weekend... I'm staying hydrated and on ibuprofen/tylenol/cold & flu meds...

Today I've still had a minor fever, but probably the worst sore throat I've ever had... no muscle aches so far, but I can still feel that something isn't right... I am hoping the worst is over, though... My wife and son haven't shown any signs of anything, so that is one thing that is making me fear the rogue mosquito...

I never really get sick, so this sucks...

wnv is on the upswing this year... pretty sucky, though nothing like what some nations have to deal with in mosquito-borne illnesses.

I work with mosquitoes, but not specifically wnv, and really more on the vector ecology end so I'm no expert at all but I run across a lot of the literature on this stuff and get a decent amount of general information from various control people I work with. good news for you is that if you do have wnv, you probably just have the flu-like version and at least you aren't showing any of the encephalitis symptoms yet (but even that begins with the typical symptoms usually from what I have read). however, if your eyes start feeling swollen, you start having blurred vision, confusion, weakness or stiff neck report these symptoms to your doctor asap. there are probably other symptoms, which you can find pretty much everywhere now.

i was thinking encephalitis when i read a 105 fever.

but i think you're right if there hasn't been anything else, plus the symptoms seem to be diminishing. hopefully.

Wayne County has had a death due to west nile virus (Goldsboro). It may have been an older person. I don't think they ever released a name.

The few times I've been outside, I haven't been too bothered by them. Of course, now I'll probably get eaten alive Friday night at the football game.

Hope you feel better.
