Observations from Preseason game #2

I think our goal in limiting designed runs for Cam might go all season. we'll have to see though.

We didn't do designed runs last preseason with Cam....and he broke records.

He doesn't need work on that in the preseason. Natural runner and mismatch.

They were both close and in fair position to both contend for the ball, but how many times have you seen this happen with Steve? He makes the corner think hes got him and then at the last second he accelerates passed the corner and makes the play. If you look closely right before Sean Smith grabs

Smittys shoulder to slow him down Steve had a slight lead on him and if no PI he would have went right passed him. He does it all the time look at the Texans play last year when he beat Joseph 1 on 1

Your point is definitely valid; I had mentioned that too, but no seperation actually happened. The corner was not yet beat...but (as he should be) I think he got scared b/c Smitty can make the impossible possible.

sounds like Cam put the ball in the wrong place, or threw a bad pass(havent seen game yet). it doesnt matter if the CB had good position because their is no defense for the perfect pass. go look at ARod pass to Nelson with perfect coverage by Haden.

You will see when you watch the tape, there was no 'perfect' location for THIS past b/c you can barely even see Smitty by the time the ball got to them. You are right tho on perfect passes & Smitty can make things happen. I'm just perplexed with those who saw the play & still think it was a good decision to throw it. We will lose multiple games if Cam keeps throwing those passes in 'that' same situation. Smitty still has to be put int he right situation to make the miraculous catches that he makes.

i dont know about losing multiple games because of a pick, the other phases would have to lay an egg as well.most good QBs have that gun slinger mind set, they feel like they could put a ball any where. there have been plenty of times were smitty made plays in double and triple coverage on underthrown balls.

I agree they have to have that gun-slinger attitude & take risks, BUT...not all risks are the same. There has to be a chance of seperation. There was no seperation, actually Smitty was behind the corner & with position & ball placement it will lead to INTs. In regard to losing a few games, we lose multiple close games last year, so a pick that negates points for our side (near the end zone), + gives another team points (If that team scores...with last year's D they would have), will result in a loss or more.

Even gun-slingers are taking 'calculated' risks...not just throwing it up without regard to the WR being open or where they are placing the ball.

Not necessarily, I think you are making a big deal of a throw that many great qbs and great receivers make. Look at this throw by aaron rodgershttp://www.nfl.com/v...-touchdown-pass

The coverage is almost perfect and there is no seperation but rodgers just throws it for his receiver to get it, it could of EASILY been intercepted as well. And the argument that smitty is smaller than the cornerbacks is stupid because we have seen smitty jump over many receivers to get balls. His vertical is probably top 5 in the league considering his size.

I'm not making a big deal out of anything, so go back & read how this began. I said iut was a bad decision by Cam & multiple people want to argue that it is a good decision. It's fine to be ignorant, but to repeatedly go back to the well for something that is obvious is just silly. Seriously, go back & read, it really seems like people are missing the entire point.

Should I go back & pull some videos of Jake's throws? Were they good? No. Did many end up with lucky end results early in his tenure with the Panthers? Yes. Was I worried & making comments like this back then? Yes. DId it ultimately bite the Panthers in the rear...yes.

Jake did not lose his ability (the is not an ounce of comparision to him & Cam, so don't try to make 1). When QB repeatedly makes questionable decisions, it WILL hurt the team ultimately. Why is it so hard to admit that 'in this case' he should have looked at his OTHER 3 receivers?!! 2 other WRs & a TE, not to mention RBs were on the field as well.

This height thing is stupid too. Why do people talk about Calvin Johnson's height? Because it matters. Even tho physically Johnson is big, stronger, faster than Smitty...they still attribute a part of his game to height. Why are all of the rest of our receivers over 6 feet? Because size doesn't matter? I guess common sense & football sense just doesn't matter to those responding in like mind to this. I'm done with this topic b/c it has become nonsensical (the height comment I made was a small part of a broader explaination...it's still there in text...you can search it).

Recap of my whole point: Bad QB decision. CB played it nearly perfectly, but was clearly PI. Smitty is awesome but was not open on this route. Everything else was explaining the circumstances.

A QB should take calculated risks, I agree. BUT...the equasion in this case (circumstances) does not merit the risk. Simple. I can give you more examples of the bad side of these throws than you can for the 'A. Rodgers example'...niether proves right or wrong. Maybe we (Panthers fans) just have a low football IQ collectively? I jest, but am starting to wonder with the selcetive attention used to 'debate' my point (be decent enough to at least get what I am arguing correct).

EDIT (8/18/12 @ 10:32am): Just so this doesn't devolve again. The other WRs being over 6', are our likely starters (LaFell, Murphy, Gettis)...obviously Pilares & Adams are under, but I have not seen Adams lined up at WR yet.

I didn't want to muddy things more in last posts, so kept this by itself. You do realize the last words on that clip were:

"Jordy Nelson uses his SIZE & leaping ability to GO OVER THE SMALLER CORNER".

He didn't say it in caps, but that is just for emphasis. You proved my point with this video...thanks!

The thing is. I did not impune Cam or Smitty with my observation...why the hell would I?!

Cam is young & still learning the game. If Cam really is not thinking & just throwing it up to Smitty without consideration of the game study he has done, then we are screwed. Cam does believe in Smitty & he should, but reality (circumstances) has to play into it as well. Smitty is 1-1 multiple times in a game & last year Cam threw some INTs b/c he didn't account for the circumstances & threw it to Smitty no matter what; the best WR can't do anything if the ball doesn't touch their hands.

Not sure what you are talking about.

Because I try not to speak out of my rear, I just replayed that. I remembered it correctly. If anything, the corner was getting better position on Steve.

The corner had him the entire way. Why would you put forth an ignorant & untrue statement?

The 1 thing I didn't recall, was exactly how bad the pass was. It was perfectly to the corner (Smitty was nearly even visable...6-3 to 5-9 height difference does tend to dwarf a guy). Smitty was NOT taking off from the corner. Unfortunately, of course...I would have preferred that reality played out the way you made it sound.

You might want to attend the Football 101 course that the Panthers offer. It is designed to teach people with little to no understanding if the game....and after your posts, you clearly qualify.

Oh, you are so witty. A content-absent post about nothing. Why don't you remove all questions of your ignorance & post something with content oh great 1. Seriously. You will likely just continue to resorting to name-calling. I actually played the game in high school & for a year in college (until my lack of speed & size made it apparent that I was not college football material). Additionally, I have coached 6 years of football (youth league, but hey...still football). Are you 14 years old? (apologies to 14 year olds for putting you in the same category!)

In a one on one, Smitty is a calculated gamble worth taking against any CB not named Revis, Nnamdi, and maybe 1 or 2 other guys. You just give him a shot to make the play. He will either make a play, prevent the INT, and will draw a PI most likely. He doesn't need to be open

CRA. I agree with you in general. Smitty is awesome & that is right overall. I guess we will see what people think when it happens 'for real' instead of pre-season. I better not see people saying Cam made a bad decision if we lose a game.

It makes me think of a situation where a DE makes an outside speed move on the LT (when his job on the play is holding the edge) & the RB blasts through the hole created & picks up a huge gain. That too is a calculated risk & the LT may be prone to getting beat on a speed technique to the outside, BUT...his job is to hold the edge. Cam's first job always is to avoid giving up the ball & secondly to score points.
