Observations from Preseason game #2

Can't say I agree with this. In a 'normal' situation, where the WR has a step on a corner, you may be right, BUT...it was bad from the get go, thru the conclusion. The corner did not need to grab Smitty & the corner was in a better position throughout the play.

In this case, I would have rather Cam checked down & lived for another play; luckily the refs saw the grab.

Not sure if he needed to grab him, but he did. Don't think the corner would have made the pick without the armbar holding Smitty back.

The throw was a questionable decision, but it shows he trusts Smitty. It was definitely a PI, what changed it from normal give and take to PI was when the CB nudged Smitty's shoulder enough to turn Smitty around a little bit. Once you affect a WR's route after 5 yards, it's gonna get called every time.

I agree, it was most deff PI...textbook PI even. Smith (dolphins) clearly stuck out his right arm and stopped Smitty.

Good call.

I have to admit I was extremely pleased with these officials, they are really getting better after being thrown into full speed action.

First off, Lighten up Francis!

Secondly, why do you think Sean grabbed Smitty, other than the fact that, Smitty was about to blow pass him?

The lighten up is funny. The reason it drives me crazy tho is b/c I watched the play, I have explained it up until there & even with your last post. "Why do I think he grabbed Steve?" Why does Steve drop passes at times, why does he breathe? The corner 'did' grab him, but had better position even when he did grab him. Maybe the correct answer is that the corner is still pretty young..as to why he grabbed him. Why do top level OL hold the D throughout a game.

If my memory is correct, the following happened on the play to Smitty...the cornerback had good position throughout the play. Cam threw the ball short, not long. Smitty was attempting to slow up and turn to get inside position. The CB's arm prevented him from doing it.

So it wasn't a case of Smitty getting ready to blow by the CB. Had he done so, the CB could have caught the ball uncontested, as the throw was short.

Again, this is off my memory, so I could very well be wrong.

I was at the game last night and thought the PI call was a bad call against the dolphins.

I got home and re-watched it and it was a good call in my opinion. The corner reached out and pulled Smith back to him and then adjusted to the ball.

If anything, you could make an argument that it could have been defensive holding instead, but regardless, it was definitely a penalty

every QB in the NFL will throw it to their #1 if he was 1on1 with a CB.

This gets me back to my real point. A situation without assessing the realiies is rarely a good idea.

So, the facts: 1-1, check. Corner has better position from take off throughout, check. Corner is 6" taller that WR, check. WR 'may have' been able to create some seperation if more time, check.

You don't just throw it up without accounting for this stuff. Sean Smith is not a bad corner & is 1 of the tallest in the NFL. It is not true to "every QB would throw it to their #1 with a CB".

Cam threw 1 freakin bad pass last night & we are way off track. I'm very happy the game went & the way Cam played.

I agree LP89, it was a good call & the refs did a good job; maybe too may calls, but overall they made good calls. I think they could have let some 'little things' go, like the regualr refs.
