A new perspective on Byron Bell

Preseason means absolutely nothing. If Bell can handle the crowd noise and intensity of a regular season game is all that matters.

Not true. It isn't meaningless. It is used to measure raw football talent and ability along with practices.

Bell has issues. Sunday night will be his first chance to show of he has improved or not. It won't be the end all be all....but does have meaning.

I don't give a poo about crowd noise....I worry about Bell showing again he simply isn't athletic enough to handle pass rushers consistatly on the outside.

Again, in a limited sample, he did well against Barwin. The one exception was on the one long run Cam had that night. Don't know if you remember the play, but the rush was from both sides, and it came so fast that it resembled a draw play. Bell had pushed Barwin past Cam, but if Cam hadn't taken off either Barwin or someone else would have gotten a sack.

While not a great test, he looked very good in pass protection the other night against the Dolphins, but there were a few times when his run blocking looked a little lazy.

That wasn't enough of a sample to tell if he got better or worse against HOU

He was playing against bench guys against the Phins. Those werent pass rushers

I'm sorry but it is meaningless for the most part. As a RT, crowd noise and poise play a huge factor. There's no way of knowing whether Bell has improved until he is back in that type of situation again.

Meaningless for vets and proven players...not meaningless in terms of evaluating young or unproven players or even aging guys. I mean those guys earn roster spots and position themselves on the depth chart largely bc of preseason. Jets are a prime example, preseason will determine who is starting for them week 1. Meaningless for Revis....not everyone.

Dealing with crowd noise wasn't Bell's only concern. Simple talent to play RT was. Preseason matters for guys like him....especially when there is other talent on the roster like Campbell.
