carolina looks good. the defense looks good. special teams looks good. the offense looks good.

but this is against miami...who looks just as lost and borderline awful as they did last week against tampa bay.

The team looked very good tonight and this will no doubt excite a lot of people. There were lots of encouraging signs from ST and Defense. I am glad these two groups showed up to play as they seem to have improved and hopefully what we saw last night was not just because Miami really sucks.

I don't think anyone should overreact to preseason but some might use it as a barometer for the upcoming season. If that is the case, then after the first preseason game we were right to have a guarded concern. After the second there is reason for cautious optimism.

It beats hell out of the alternative, playing like crap and then feeling same for the next week.

And on another note, while I am not a Clausen fan by any stretch of the imagination, I have to give the guy props for toughness. To get nailed as often as he does, he always seems to get right back up and move on to the next play. It HAS to be disheartening to him after the success he had in college, yet he keeps on trying. If Jimmy doesn't get credit for anything else, he ought to get credit for that.

Statistics wise, Clausen certainly filled up a stat sheet while at Notre Dame – especially in 2009. At the same time, Clausen didn’t do anything to really one up the numbers that Quinn put up over the course of his career or in any particular career. Quinn still had seasons with more touchdowns, more yards, etc.

The biggest knock on Clausen though, was his record as a starting quarterback. No matter how much of it was his fault, Clausen compiled a record of just 15-17 (2-6 in 2007, 7-5 in 2008, and 6-6 in 2009) over his three years as the starting quarterback. In some of those losses Clausen saw his defense fail him after putting the Irish ahead (see ’09 Michigan and Syracuse ’08 for example). In other losses those Clausen had a chance to put the Irish ahead at the end but came up just short (see ’09 USC and ’08 North Carolina).

Why would you want a QB who has shown nothing in Carolina, put up a mediocre record at ND, and seemed to have peeked in High School.

Clausen's rating for last night was 58 and the week before 60. Newton's was 138. Nuff said,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

But the point is correct that we are not as bad as we looked last week or as good as we looked this week. Teams are not game planning or dialing up much pressure. We beat up on a rookie who looked lost as they all do and Moore who didn't play well at all. This was more about how bad Miami is as this point than how good we are.

    • Getting any level of competition and cohesion out of this roster is a job well done.
    • Not sure if anyone else is watching this D1-AA championship game but I don't know if these receivers have NFL athleticism but they got HANDS. These boys can flat out CATCH. This is a good football game.
    • People on here are wrong all the time. I mean some of our best draft picks people didn't like initially due to various reasons. On the other hand there have been a multitude of decisions made by people who are paid very well to know what they're doing that some Panthers fans here saw as a mistake a mile away. Well look man let's put all the chips on the table. Because your grievance is particularly about the QB position. The Panthers have had only two long term starting franchise QB's in 30 years. Thirty years. Two. This fanbase has seen a hell of a lot of poor to mediocre QB play and even short lived fairy tales like the Kyle Allen win streak or going back even further Matt Moore. As far as Darnold and Mayfield goes I think they are certainly overachieving but I don't think anyone here that was critical of either of them were wrong. They both had a heaping portion of humble pie here that has served them greatly now. Mayfield in particular because when he first got here he was still a cocky idiot. Darnold at least kept his head down and did his job for the most part. But I have a hard time seeing either of them going far in the playoffs because in the midst of some of their best games I've seen the same flawed QB's. Darnold is no Nick Foles let's be real with one another here. Baker specifically looked like hot garbage against our defense in Charlotte recently. And those best teams in the playoffs have all that on film and damn well know about it too if average fans like us can see it.
