Bucky Brooks and Matt Money Smith podcast. Marty doesn't call in at time so they edit in his interview at the end. He talks about how Deangelo and Stew are such good friends. That's nice and all but a GM shouldn't care about that sort of stuff.

Why shouldn't he? Harmony in the locker room and outside should be a concern.

You don't pay out millions of dollars because guys are "nice" or "good people". We did it with Thomas Davis last year and he could have bent us over this off season. You sign guys because they improve your team and fit the big picture. There are plenty of high character guys out there that make better cap sense. I'm not saying signing J Stew is a bad idea, I'm just saying Marty Hurney's logic is fail.

Two best players in Panther history are Smitty and Peppers.

Overall over the course of their careers, neither has gotten along that great with teammates. They are here to play football....who cares if Double Trouble like to chill together on the weekends.

....and don't list an example of one of them liking a singular player or an example of one being nice to someone. Big picture.

Hurney signed Stewart because he's one of the most talented RBs in the league and thinks he can really help this team . It certainly helps that Stewart is nice. But that is not the major logic behind this signing.

Thomas Davis's contract was set up so it wouldn't really hurt us. Davis also wasn't just signed because he was a nice guy, he was one of the top Wlb in the game before injury.

You contradict yourself so much in this.

You sign players to make your team better, so J stew doesn't make the team better?

You want good character guys on your team. It's a well known fact that JR loves those types of players. The team has no tolerance for anything else. It just so happens that Stewie is a very good RB.

I think he'd be concerned if his RB's didn't get along and were bickering and fighting all the time. Just saying..

Hate to contradict, but if my GM (boss) didn't care if anyone where I worked got along, I predict I would be unemployed within 6 months as the place would go out of business.

Camaraderie is vital in business and in the military. I would venture a guess that an NFL team is a little of both.

You guys are missing it. First Ivan, I don't have a problem with signing Stewart but it should be for his talent, not how good friends he is on the team. If you've read Marty quotes about the signing he has brought up friendship and how his personality "fits this organization". He said similar things about Jake Delhomme after signing Jake to 20million guaranteed post 5 int in playoffs game. We got rid of Kris Jenkins because he didn't fit our organization but you know what? Jenks was one hell of a DT, we still haven't replaced him.

Second, you guys make it sound like players getting along is some sort of rare occurrence we should be grateful for. Most players get along. We don't need to jeopardize the cap to keep friends together. In some cases conflict can bring out the best in guys when they are trying to get their touches. Steve is an example of a guy that mixes it up. Great player, but he can rub guys the wrong way.

Third, back to Ivan. We signed Thomas Davis to a massive contract after he missed one and a half seasons to injury. We did NOT sign that deal before injury. We paid him $1m in base and $7m in signing bonus. We effectively gave him $8m guaranteed when he hadn't played since 2009. Had we cut ties with him this spring that $7m signing bonus would have hit this 2012 season and destroyed our cap space. He could have used that as a bargaining chip to keep some of the $8m option bonus due this year but he helped us out and waived the option bonus. Still, with all that said he's a $2.25m cap hit right now for us. The contract he signed in 2011 was dumb. Had he played at a pro bowl level we still would have cut him because the contract was so bad. It was Hurney doing a solid for someone he admired. It didn't make football sense.

Again, I'm not saying it was wrong to resign Stew. I am saying friendship and to a degree character should not have much if any influence. There are plenty of guys out there that are good in the locker room that make better cap/football sense. (Tolbert for example). Character should be a pass/fail check box on every player. Not an attribute with weighted value.
