Breaking down Jonathan Stewart's deal

Tell me, how have those 17 years gone for us?

I'm not trying to be a dick. I'm just tired of the same old thing. Yes, we can restructure these deal. But the bad contracts still put us in bad situations. It's like we're fighting to keep our head above the water every year.

Certainly there has been ups and downs, but not to the point of panicking IMO.

Carolina already was looking at salary-cap trouble in future seasons. With Stewart’s deal, the Panthers now have $134 million committed toward the 2013 salary cap. The exact cap figure won’t be determined until next spring, but it’s safe to say the Panthers are at least $10 million over where the limit will be. They’re getting up there with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a league-high $140 million committed toward next year’s cap.

It gets even worse as you look ahead to 2014, when the Panthers have $144 million committed toward the cap. Only the Eagles ($145 million) already have more cap space committed.

Heck, the Panthers already have $110 million committed toward the 2015 cap and that’s with only 18 players already under contract for that year.

What is there to worry about?

1) I am highly doubtful Cam will be resigned until the end of the 2014 Season at the very least. The Panthers can't resign him per the CBA until after next season, and they signed him to a 4 year deal with a team option for a 5th. They wouldn't even have to franchise him until after the 2015 season. And I doubt it comes to that

2) The salary cap is expected to sky-rocket in 2014 when the new TV money hits. The Panthers will probably not be active in free agency next off-season, but outside of that, there is nothing in the Stewart deal (or D-Will's for that matter) that will preclude them from doing anything long-term. Those numbers out in 2015 are basically worthless in the grand scheme of things. Guys like D-Will, Gamble, etc will probably either restructure, be cut, etc. by then

1 - Cam will most likely need to be signed after the 2013 season. It was a 4 yr deal and a cheap one at that. Look at prior QBs that were good that got paid to those big rookie deals in Eli, Rivers, Ben, etc. They all got paid BEFORE they played in their last year.

You don't want Cam Newton sniffing the end of a contract. All that means is he is likely to do what tons of big names are starting to do in sports. Flex his muscle and leave town. That would be awesome, Cam to pull a Pep. Yeah, no thanks, just tag me and someone else can pay me.....or you know what, just trade me b/c this ain't working.

I agree with you about signing him after next season provided something bad doesn't happen. I was just trying to point out the Stewart deal does nothing to hurt the Panthers ability to pay Newton as an upper echelon QB and still have money to function with in 2014 and beyond

Not signing him after next year opens doors to thoughts we don't want Cam to think about. Potential weak cast at what some percieve as the important positions in a passing league, a team that still hasn't found Smitty's replacement and what will be your #1 WR for the bulk of your career, little room in invest heavily in these b/c of signing you.....

Need to lock him up quickly to a long term deal. Those suggesting we treat that 5th year option like an actual year are crazy. Yeah, tag Cam Newton and watch him leave.

lol you act like questioning the front office affects my whole life. This a fan board....where you talk about the team. Just because I say I think they are screwing up doesn't mean I'm in panic mode or my whole life is going down the drain. If you let things like this bring you down, you have issues. But questioning something is completely normal.

Thing is though we always question this stuff every year yet we always somehow keep the players we want long term, if you're gonna question anything about hurney, question his drafting skills past the first round and ability to find good pass rushers, not his salary cap management.. He's proven in the past he knows to manage money and manage it well, in fact most GM's can, unless your vinny cerrato.. But my point is we tend to worry about this stuff every year but somehow we always end up fine in the end (i.e. as everyone thought the world was gonna end and we wouldn't be able to sign jstew after dwill's contract, look what just happened?)

And I'm not saying he's perfect at this stuff either (i.e. delhomme's ridiculous extension) but he's better than people give him credit for, plus we always end up fine and under the cap in the end... But I guess people just like to find stuff to freak out about and over concern themselves with to pass the time with idk

totally agreed with this and the previous post.

i do think that jake's extension had more to do with giving fox what he wanted and trying to make a way to force pep to stay in a year that he didn't want to stay (which i also don't think was a great idea but oh well).
