Actually Richardson discussed this point when we finished 7-9 in 2009 after having brought in a number of free agents over the past few years. He looked at the fact that other than 2008 where we went 12-4 in the regular season and were summarily kicked out of the playoffs by Arizona, we really have very little to show for that free agent strategy. We have not been to the NFC Championship game since 2005 which was 7 years ago. He stated that if he was going to have losing seasons he might as well go with younger cheaper guys.

Am I a big fan of that strategy? No I am not and had quite a bit to say about it in 2010 when we dumped all the veterans and went on the cheap. But I have learned to accept it as our philosophy for better or worse. I am tired of bitching about something I can't change. Try the serenity prayer, it works for football as well.

Every single time we've made a deep run into the playoffs we were involved in free agency the year prior. In 1996 we brought in Kevin Greene, Wesley Walls, Greg Skrepenak, Eric Davis, all guys that proved to be big time contributers that year.

Before the 2003 season? Okay, um, there was Stephen Davis, Jake Delhomme, Ricky Proehl. Also I can't help but to include Brentson Buckner, Mark Fields, Al Wallace and Jeff Mitchell while we're at it whom were free agent acquisitions from previous seasons.

Before 2005 we added Lucas, Wahle, Marlon McCree and Chris Draft.

Even in 2008 we brought back Moose, signed Keydrick Vincent, and added Tyler Brayton to the roster.

This isn't just something we've benefitted from. The Giants, Packers, Saints*, Patriots, Ravens all improve their roster by upgrading through trades or FA acquisitions. Even when Hurney fleeced Jerry Angelo for Greg Olsen, he said something in the press along the lines of "I went up to Richardson and said 'look I know we've talked about just building through the roster you know'" as if ripping off the Bears was like pulling teeth from our end. What could we have gotten in the third round that would've been as good as Olsen? Free Agency, or even trading, is something to use to gain a competitive advantage, and in this league, winning is priceless. You don't gain any extra credit in prestige for saving money. Money which, by the way, is granted through collective bargaining and isn't even directly coming out of Richardson's pockets.

And it seems to me like this perception of a zen outlook by just accepting every boneheaded philosophy this team has is false because I didn't see a lot of serenity prayer at work on your part last night when you were typing in all caps trying to force every other poster on here to conform to a numb, stepford-like fanbase. If you're prepping up a response re-iterating your point about accepting it because you've got no control over it and that's your bottom line then save your energy because I understand what you're saying, I don't agree with it, and I'm not going to just ballyhoo every single transaction this team makes whether it makes sense or is foolish. I know you understand what I'm saying.

How many impactful players on those teams can you name other than Brees that led to their team to a superbowl that were not drafted?? CRA since you like that post you can play too!

btw, if your best players come from free agency, what does that say about your drafting skills?

ok. I will go first. I pick Green Bay.

Charles Woodson. He has been an All Pro the last 4 yrs and earned a DPOY award. He was a HUGE part of their Superbowl RING season.

Is that how it works? What do I win? I wonder who is going to name Wes Welker for NE.....

To start off Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer. The year prior they added Vilma and Shockey through trades and Randall Gay.

It's unrealistic for any team to assume they can get more than 2-3 starters out of any given draft. And after the 2nd round you're lucky if anybody you take turns out to be as good as depth.

CRA, you help me make it make through the boringass work days! For that you win pie.

One player great job!! Who would have knew signing 1 corner would lead to the superbowl, somebody should tell the Eagles that..oh wait

Sharper is a good one. He had just as much to do w/ that ring as Brees. It was comical the plays Sharper made that year.

okay, what teams are left from the list? Giants and Patriots? How about we look at that 2007 Superbowl matchup since it was so memorable.....greatest NFL offense vs the underdog Giants.

Plaxico Burress - 1000+ yards, 12 TDs

Wes Welker - 1000+ yards 8 TDs

Randy Moss - 1000+ yards 23 TDs

I feel like it's needs to be said that Jarrett Bush was once ours, had a phenomenal TC and preseason, and was cut in favor of some chumpish ole veteran like Dante Wesley or whoever the crapped up our depth chart that year.

FO knows best!

Is Jarrett Bush having a good preseason? I was under the impression that Greenbay's secondary was terrible last year, and he didn't even start anyway.

Their fans pretty much consider him their Captain Munnerlyn. But we can't let that get in the way of our emotions!!!1
