It's That Time Again... The Armanti Thread

I've had the thought process of letting AE get 3 seasons to transition from college QB to a NFL Returner/WR, we've been seeing improvments, albeit slow ones, but the additions of pilares and adams make his return career non existenet, so now he's got to show he can cut it as a WR over gettis, murphy, tutu, pilares, and adams. I'm sure Chico and Co will let him show his stuff in the preseason, but this is make or break for him. Maybe they do end up placing AE at QB3 as a utility player, who knows. Hopefully he shows up and shows out just so its another thing for the huddle to meltdown about.

The only way the Panthers should keep him is if Clausen is cut.

Armanti could be the ultimate back up for the Panthers. 3rd string qb. pr #2 kr#2 and an extra wide recevier if needed.

Of course his routes look better at wide receiver, now that he has had a couple of years at the new position. He had never played wr before being drafted. Hell, I am not sure he would have seen the field much at App State as a wide receiver. He did have two 2nd round nfl draft picks playing wide receiver while he was a Mountaineer.

I wonder how good Cam would have been last year returning punts or playing wide receiver

Good point. How long would it take Cam to transition from QB To WR or PR... Armanti Needs At Least One More Year to develop. It's like making the manager at a subway go manage a fortune 500 company. You can't expect them to transition and make an impact so fast.

I think edwards gets cut even if clausen does too.No way are they gonna play him @ qb.And i wouldn't be surprised if we just had cam and derrick this year and used the extra roster spot for something else. And can someone please tell me why edwards has never been moved to defensive back? I think he's had db written all over him since he came out of college. His size is better suited for db,he's certainly athletic enough,he doesn't have great hands, and he would be a natural guy to read a qb's tendencies.Even chris gamble was recruited by ohio state as a receiver and switched to db.Gamble always says "those who can't catch play defense!" lol. and i totally agree.I think armanti can make it in the league potentially.I just think he's been at the wrong position for 3 years.

Armanti will be a roster casualty this training camp, he has improved, but not enough to warrant a spot on our 53 nor to justify where he was drafted and what we gave up to get him. I doubt Pilares will be cut given his production in the KR game last season and Joe Adams is without a doubt our primary punt return man.

That being said, I don't think that Gettis is as safe as most huddlers seem to. During the new coaching regime he has been injured and unable to prove himself on the field. No doubt the coaching staff has seen tape on him from the 2010-11 season, but is that enough of a resume to keep a roster spot open when one of the main themes of this new staff has been to compete day in and day out in order to earn your spot on this team? The new coaching staff is probably frustrated with Gettis's lack of practice and playing time and I could easily see TuTu beat out Armanti and Gettis for one of our WR spots.

I don't know why the team waited until Clausen was in to put AE in, considering he's been running with Anderson all camp. That was a little weird, especially after all the reports of how he had been building great timing with Anderson. I suspect that the coaching staff wanted to get an extended look at Tutu and Murphy to see exactly what they had there. I expect AE to run with Anderson in the game later this week.

His route running did look really good though. Compared to previous years anyhow. I still maintain that Gettis is NOT a lock to make this team. He has literally never seen the field during live action for this coaching staff. He's going to have to have a pretty good showing when he finally hits the field to be able to stick I think.

This is the most likely scenario and AE will probably see a lot more time with Anderson in the next 2 games.

Being an AE homer, I'm almost ashamed that this is my first huddle post (been lurking for a couple years...)

I think the above comment is spot on.

Did we screw up by trading UP for AE? Yes.

Did he get screwed by Fox? Yes

Has he improved? Yes, greatly.

Is it enough to beat out the current crop? Doubtful.

I also think that Gettis is on the bubble. I mean, the dude hasn't played for over a year and is STILL not ready. I mean, we could start to make the case that Gettis is becoming the new AE...(waiting on our return)

Could he be the ultimate backup (#3 QB, #2 PR, #2KR)? Sure, it would be weird, but it could happen.

Could one of the 'better' receivers get hurt and bump him up? Sure.

I think AE needs 'help' (injury) to make the Panthers.

Honestly, as a Panther fan, but more as an ASU fan, I'm ready for AE to head off somewhere else and start fresh. I HOPE he plays well in the next 3 preseason games and makes the team so that my favorite player is on my favorite NFL team, but I think the AE ship has sailed in Carolina. I think if he stays on the Panthers, he'll be a backup and I'd rather see him go somewhere that needs a slot receiver or PR or KR.

Was that objective enough? :)

A rookie stepped in and did better at punt returns in his first game.

Another rookie QB?

I am not a fan of AE but everyone knew AE was a project and he has been given enough time, even considering that fact. If he can't show enough this year in preseason we should open up the roster spot.

Problem is I don't think we had the right 'teaching' coaching staff to turn a project like AE into something worth a poo. Even natural WRs take 2-3 years usually to show something, so I think AE shold get more time than a normal rookie but the time needs to be soon.

Look, I've been an Edwards fan since he was at App State. He did some great, incredible things there. He deserved a shot.

He got that shot.

I'm still a fan, but it's definitely because of his college career. He hasn't shown much so far in the big scope of things. There are only 53 spots to fill on each team and it takes something special to hold down one of those spots. He is a special kid, the potential has been there. But it is time to make the jump or move on and let the next guy have a chance.

So, what did we see in game 1 of the preseason from him? A willingness to return a kick off and that's a big improvement for him. His first two years doing returns, he looked, well, scared. Timid even. This time, he made his cut and went for it, he was decisive and took the ball a ways down the field. Didn't break the big one, but really, those instances are rare for even the best returners.

He did look better as a receiver and did snag a pass with some yardage. He also would have had a touchdown had the ball been placed a bit better and there weren't two defenders draped over him. Or, if he'd have been Steve Smith. The great ones find a way to catch a bad pass or fight off the defenders when the game, or a career, is on the line.

Of course, even Smitty had a lot of trouble catching passes Jimmy "Scream Like A Little Girl" Claussen. It's not fair to lay all of the blame on Claussen but when we're looking at who has improved with time and who hasn't in the same span, Claussen is the bigger "Sorry, kid, but it's time" story.

Armanti as the QB3? I'd love to see it, really I would. Armanti had more completions than either our QB2 or QB3 last year. I watched that pass again and again. Armanti's still got a good arm and he can run an option play like few others.

But let's face it, the Wildcat Offense had a very brief day in the sun. No matter what the Jets think, that gimmick is gone.

Realistically, Armanti will have to do something incredible in the next three weeks to be able to keep claiming a roster spot. And he'll have to do that in light of being surrounded by a slew of other kids in the exact same boat.

He's had two years to develop. Someone else didn't get that spot because of him. He's pulled down a salary that most of us will never see north of for both of those years. He's had the benefit of professional coaches, strength and conditioning systems, playbooks, an open film room, and the chance to study under the best undersized receiver the game has ever seen.

Kid, it's time to make it, or break it. Just about kill yourself to catch one of those Jimmy Claussen wounded gooses. Take a return and slice through a defense like a hot knife through butter. Take the ball and wing a pass that makes your coach go wow.

Or pack up the stuff, realize what a lucky kid you were and head on out to real life.
