After Stewart's deal is factored into this years cap the team will not have 8 million in space. It's probably done to something around 2-3 million now.

I thought when we "extended" him any cap ramifications would take place starting next year when his current deal expires.

Also, looks like all the complainer's are finally giving up!!

Who was the last Superbowl winning team that had a better defense than offense?

Just off the top of my head, I don't remember any... Almost all of the recent championship teams had turnover-creating defenses that weren't necessarily top ranked.

Look at all the great defenses that fell short because the defense was better than the offense (Ravens, Jets, etc.).

Packers, and Saints* since 2009. That is 2 of the last 3.

That doesn't factor into the cap this year so it is still 8. If we bring that whole 8 forward we can pay him next year and still have some left over to use with everyone else.

I disagree with the D not being a priority, I think RR believes he can make the D better with his background while maintaining a high flying O. We drafted a LB 9th overall and then traded up to land a DE.

Yeah, but belief and reality are just two different things

We are no longer a defensive team.

We are interested in outscoring other teams with the defense helping a bit here and there.

We are not interested in trying to allow under 14 points a game.

Well teams that play the we will outscore you game......try to take advantage of the rules and take it to the air. We are still investing offensively like we have a top 5 D and can afford to pound RBs.

Why not? Players are extended all the time in order to create cap space. That would suggest that the new contract takes affect in the current season and bonus money begins to be spread in the current year. Why would a team extend someone to a new contract with guaranteed money if there is a chance they could get hurt before that contract even begins. That would be stupid.

Worked for the Colts during the Manning years but at least they had Freeney bringing the heat at key moments of the game...Panthers don't have a Freeney, at this time.

Worked for the Colts bc they invested in passing talent

1st round picks for Peyton to throw to drafted by Indy.

Harrison

Wayne

Clarke

Gonzalez.

1st round rec threats drafted by Carolina? That Cam has? None, they drafted to pound the rock and play great D. Our roster is still heavily slanted that way.

Honestly man, Kearse and Edwards should be the starters at DT.

At CB, Captain shouldn't be a starter obviously and if Norman, Hogan, or Butler could step in, that would make a significant difference in our pass defense.

LB corps is probably the best in the league if they can stay healthy. Sure, they could've brought in some competition at CB and DT, but there are capable guys on the roster. Safety should be somewhat better with Nakamura in there, but Godfrey still hasn't proven to be a consistent performer, so we'll see there.

I like what we have, I just think it comes down to playing the right guys.

Kearse looked good?

Stewart's contract doesn't end until after this year so any cap savings would be for 2013 not 2012 so there won't be any cap savings this year so the current 8 million won't change. Why would we extend him now instead of next year when he could get hurt this season?? It is a 5 year deal and we are looking long term. Even if he got hurt in 2012 unless it was a career ending injury we are better off extending now and locking him up instead of waiting until he becomes a free agent when he can command top bucks. His 9 million guaranteed now gives him 9 million plus his salary of 1.3 million for a total of 10.3 milllion although his cap in 2012 stays at 2.6 million. He has a 9 million option in 2014 which is guaranteed an some of his 2013 salary is guaranteed. It is a win for us and him.

Contracts are always risky. We extended Beason and he missed a whole year. I still don't think many folks think that was a huge mistake if he returns to form this year.

    • You are doing the Lord’s work this off-season.
    • Carolina Panthers: B RB Rico Dowdle 2024 PFF Grade: 73.9 2024 PFF WAR: 0.13 Contract: 1 year, $3 million PFF Projected Contract: 3 years, $15 million ($8.5 million guaranteed) PFF Deal Grade: Above Average Dowdle had a career year with the Dallas Cowboys in 2024, earning a 74.4 PFF rushing grade, averaging 3.28 yards after contact per carry and forcing 45 missed tackles. He joins a Panthers backfield that includes Chuba Hubbard, who earned an 87.0 PFF rushing grade a year ago. P Sam Martin 2024 PFF Grade: 67.8 Contract: 1 year, $3 million PFF Projected Contract: N/A PFF Deal Grade: Above average Martin has been a reliable punter, earning a PFF punting grade above 65.0 in each of the past five seasons. He should be an upgrade over Johnny Hekker, who posted PFF punting grades of 60.2 in 2023 and 53.3 in 2024. C Brady Christensen 2024 PFF Grade: 63.6 2024 PFF WAR: 0.02 Contract: 1 year, $2.787 million ($2.787 million guaranteed) PFF Projected Contract: 2 years, $7.5 million ($4 million guaranteed) PFF Deal Grade: Average A solid depth re-signing for Carolina, Christensen had two games in 2024 where he earned a PFF grade above 75.0. He also brings valuable versatility, having started at both left tackle and center last season and at every position along the offensive line throughout his career. DI Tershawn Wharton 2024 PFF Grade: 61.7 2024 PFF WAR: 0.15 Contract: 3 years, $54 million ($30 million guaranteed) PFF Projected Contract: 2 years, $16.25 million ($9 million guaranteed) PFF Deal Grade: Below Average Acting as primarily an interior pass-rushing specialist for the Chiefs during their run to the Super Bowl in 2024, Wharton enjoyed a solid year of production, notching nine sacks on his way to capturing a career-best 71.9 PFF pass-rush grade. In his fifth season, Wharton secured his first-ever double-digit pass-rush win rate (10.5%). However, one year of production makes this significant contract a bit of a risk.  DI Bobby Brown III 2024 PFF Grade: 61.4 2024 PFF WAR: 0.05 Contract: 3 years, $21 million PFF Projected Contract: N/A PFF Deal Grade: Average A fourth-round draft pick back in 2021, Brown has earned a PFF overall grade above 60.0 in all four of his NFL seasons. This is a modest deal, and he will form part of the Panthers' revamped interior defensive line rotation. EDGE Patrick Jones II 2024 PFF Grade: 55.7 2024 PFF WAR: -0.03 Contract: 2 years, $20 million PFF Projected Contract: 2 years, $10 million ($6 million guaranteed)  PFF Deal Grade: Below Average Although Jones experienced a productive year as a rotational contributor along the Vikings’ front, his numbers largely came as a result of Brian Flores’ scheme in Minnesota. While Jones enjoyed a career-best 69.4 PFF run-defense grade in 2024, his marks as a pass-rusher left much to be desired. His seven sacks in 2024 were a career high, but he managed just a 6.7% pass-rush win rate — 103rd out of 130 qualifying edge defenders in 2024. CB Tre’Von Moehrig 2024 PFF Grade: 67.5 2024 PFF WAR: 0.14 Contract: 3 years, $51 million PFF Projected Contract: 4 years, $72 million ($40 million guaranteed) PFF Deal Grade: Average The Panthers will hope Moehrig can bring his excellent 2024 run play (87.5 PFF run-defense grade) with him from Las Vegas to Carolina, and improve upon a down season in coverage. Last year with the Raiders, he allowed completions on 38 of 54 throws into his coverage for 436 yards and five touchdowns. He did snag two interceptions and force three incompletions.
