Jonathan Stewart Signs Five Year (36.5 Million) Contract Extension

Recommended Posts

Or teams could see a 30 year old that doesn't have the tread of a 27 year old workhorse and will get him with no guaranteed money left on his deal. I think the majority of his cap hits happened this and last year, so some team will get him for 3, 4 mil a year maybe? I'm just guestimating off the top of my head.

wishful thinking. he would still be a 30 yr old RB w/ little upside long term. teams don't trade for that in this league.

if a team needs a runner, they will draft a cheaper, younger one, they can lock for years of productivty or pickup a FA that was cut.

Williams also had plenty of football miles on him. He had more than 2x the college workload RBs are coming out with in today's NFL. It isn't like he has been an iron man on the field the past 3 years either......

Williams will either retire a Panther or get cut at some point.

So many lulz, so little time...

HELL fuging YES.

I am fairly new here to this particular forum but a Panther fan since the inaugural game in Clemson (I have the fuging pictures and ticket stub to prove it). You mother fugers that have decided to ride both sides of the fence have finally went too far.

I have listened for months about how we should have cut Williams and signed Stewart. Now we have both and options.

Please STFU if your IQ is below 75. This scale involves both civilian and NFL IQ's.

Stewart is family and can run the ball better than you.

And yes I am including ALL of you.

GREAT DAY in Carolina. JStew is ours forever.

This is a Panthers forum, not a Saints*** forum. Im here to talk about the Panthers.

But, since you insist. I dont care about preseason games. I didnt even comment about Carolinas preseason game. Yes it sucks to not have SP.

I cannot stand preseason football. Ill watch highlights, but generally only the first series or two of any game. I saw Carolinas and Houstons first series. Havent seen a minute of NO play. Ill watch a bit more of the 3rd preseason games.None of the last.

Then why are you here??? You saw nothing so you have nothing to add.

Once again you are distorting the facts as usual to suit your purposes. We signed the extension with Jake in 2009 to free up cap space to keep Peppers. What he received in guaranteed money was largely what we were going to have to give him anyway in 2009 and an incentive to do the extension in the first place since there was a clause that in essence made it a 1 year deal in 2010 allowed us to void the deal in 2010. Everyone knew that he would never see a large portion of that money.

Aha, so the only way to clear up the 2 million to keep Peppers was to extend Delhomme, who was scheduled to be a free agent in 2010 anyway, so that we'd owe him 12.7 million dollars instead of nothing after 2009. Hurney seemed to communicate as much when he was on sports talk radio after the opener against the Eagles saying how this was "our worst case scenario". Also, this wasn't the point you were making back then. You were pretty optimistic about a guy who was regressing at the rate of real time. Don't act like you were talking all about how this was just a cap move.

As for the fact you think we can only run, I guess once again you fail to grasp we had the 13th best passing game in total yards last year with a rookie. We had the most 80 yard drives of any team and were one of the most prolific big play offenses in the league. Given our philosophy which is build from within we had a great passing game last year. Our running game is not stopping our passing game. What stopped it was lack of a franchise quarterback which we now have. Our offense was top 7 in total yards, we were 4th in yards per play. We are not one dimensional and the investment in the run game has not held back the passing game.

Right now it's certainly holding back the pass defense. The point being is that it's not going to hold the passing game back, the passing game is going to limit how much of all that guaranteed money in the running game is going to return. The best thing is for the entire offense to be centered around Cam, like it is with every other top offense in the league. The running game is simply a change of pace at that point.

So the bitching is really unwarranted and unneeded. And a waste of time. Carry on though...............

It's honestly a vicious cycle that's been going as far back into recent history as possible. I just wonder what the next dumb contract extension everybody is going to defend to the death on here is going to be next spring/summer.

Then answer the question ??? What is so hard?? I would think a sixth grader could do it, why can't you??? There is no accusation, if you have been following posts for years which you claim to have done since you talked about me supporting Delhomme years ago then you posted under another name. Why not tell us who it was unless you are ashamed to admit it?? For that matter why change it at all if you don;t have something to hide?? I have posted here for years under the same name for better or worse..........

So answer the question................

You have to date me first to see the goods. Seriously, what is with the obsession. A little stalker-ish for my taste.

It wasn't 2 million it was closer to five million if I remember correctly. And the price of a starting quarterback in the NFL in 2010 was around 10 million so this was not outside what we would have paid for any quarterback if he had played well. Plus you and I know that much off that money was to reward Delhomme for his play over the past 6 years when he worked for well below the going rate especially during the 2003 to 2005 period. If you want to blame Hurney and Fox for loyalty, that is a valid criticism, but that kind off legacy is one of the reason players have wanted to play for the Panthers over the years.

Was I hopeful that he could play one more year and return to his form of 2008? Guilty as charged.

Right now it's certainly holding back the pass defense. Holding us up how? We are not going to spend a bunch for a CB and haven't since we picked up Lucas which didn't really pan out that well. He cost a ton of money and wasn't that great. We did better with Gamble who we drafted and he was cheaper by far for much longer. As for DEs, other than Tyler Brayton, who have we ever spent big bucks for in the past decade. The running game is surely not a change of pace but an integral part of the run option offense. We don't run a traditional passing offense so why compare us to the Green Bays or New Englands. We don't run a west coast or Perkins Erhardt offense so the comparisons are not really valid.

It's honestly a vicious cycle that's been going as far back into recent history as possible. I just wonder what the next dumb contract extension everybody is going to defend to the death on here is going to be next spring/summer.

One man's dumb extension is another's critical element to run the offense. I trust that Chud knows what he is doing and is collecting what he needs. Hurney is just paying what he thinks he has to pay to make the deal.

Those are conflicting statements....

Disagree with the second, Hurney doesn't pay just to get a deal done and people he needs...he consistently pays guys for what the have done and flat out overpays.

Also, I didn't quote you but Lucas worked out pretty well. Overpaid? Yes....but a dang good CB until about early/midseason his last year when teams figured out Godfrey couldn't provide S help to him. Lucas was part of the reason we made our NFCCG run.

Date you? Stalker?? Seriously???? You seem like one of those guys who advertises on a dating site and keeps everything a secret because if they knew the reality they would run or laugh.

You are the one changing avatars and keeping secrets. Just wondered which troll you were. Do I care really? Hardly.............

I didn't know you ever worked in a front office and were qualified to judge what is a good deal or not. Do you honestly think that Richardson who is a billionaire would keep Hurney around for years if hee felt he was wasting his money and doing a crappy job? JR could hire a bunch of GMs and yet he stays with Hurney likely on the advice of his experts and his own opinion. You think he got as far as he did keeping incompetent people???
