Jonathan Stewart Signs Five Year (36.5 Million) Contract Extension

Recommended Posts

Timid my ass. He accelerated like he got shot out of a cannonball as soon as he touched the ball. It was Foster who was timid. I will say Williams skill set changed a little from 06-07 to 08. But he didn't just suddenly into a good back. And I know you don't believe in RB's getting old and washed up, but it happened to Foster.

You have no idea what you are talking about but then again what is new?? Williams was often criticized for running in place looking for a lane instead of seeing his spot and hitting it hard. He didn't show maximum effort as he admitted in the off-season and often tried to run outside instead of going between the tackles. Everyone talked about how differently he looked in training camp in 2008.

Yeah I was one of those who noticed that and brought it to everyone's attention at training camp that year.

So you have bitched for 18 months about how we overpaid him and now you defend him when you think you have an argument. You have wrong about everything regarding the running backs so why keep going.Just give it up. Stick to the draft and just follow my lead and you will look like a genius.

I have always been a Wiliams fan. You claiming I don't like the guy bc I believe we are over invested at RB doesn't make it so...

What have I been wrong about in regards to the running backs? I wanted them to let Stewart walk after they signed Williams. I was bitching bc I always feared we would be paying 2 featured RBs on a non Foxball team.

Sorry cannonball and lightning were used to describe Williams. He hit lanes faster than I ever seen any Carolina RB hit them. Foster was the one that tip toed and danced. I would like to see a quote of D-Will saying he didnt give maximum effort to. Just not his style. Being humble is his style yeah, but not, not giving maximum effort.

i don't buy the whole not drafting stewart if they knew what williams was capable of.

carolina has experimented with having a split backfield with davis/foster and foster/williams.

neither combination was really successful because davis was on the tail end of his career, and foster couldn't adapt to the role of playing the power back.

in came stewart, the rest is history.

I'm wouldn't doubt that they would used a split backfield regardless of their opinion on Williams. But I do doubt that it would've come in the form of a first round pick. Had they know Wiliams was a capable 1500 back, I think at most they would've drafted a back in the 2nd round.

Remember because they drafted Stewart, they had to trade a bit for Otah. I just don't see them trading those picks and using a first round pick RB just because they wanted a split backfield. That could've been accomplished with a lot less.

IMO the more logical a simpler explanation is they just didn't know what they had in Wiliiams.

What I saw in 2007 was Williams being too timid and often getting hit behind the line taking everything outside and being afraid to run between the tackles. He had potential but to say that he was great and didn't justify drafting Stewart is going way overboard. Vinny criticized him for taking himself out of the game and not wanting the ball on every play. I guess you and CRA are so into revisionistic history you just forgot the reality of what happened.

No one liked the fact that Foster fumbled too much but it was because he was always trying to do too much which was not the case with Williams.

Timid RBs getting stopped behind the line don't generally average 5 yards.

he has averaged more negative yards per carry the last 2 seasons vs 2007.

Never been about the players with me. I love Stewart and said Carolina should let Williams walk. They signed Williams so then IMO Stewart should of walked or been traded.

And yes, I was done with John Fox when he refused to give DeAngelo the reps he deserved in 2007. His favoritism cost him ever since that season in Carolina. Painting me as a Williams hater just makes it easy on the let's pay the RBs a ton of money to watch Cam do his thing crowd. Never been true.

Acknowledging Williams is aging and a younger stud was one our roster was never Williams hate.....but I don't expect you to get that this far into it.

We had a lengthy conversation and everything he said to me made perfect sense," said Williams, Carolina's first-round pick in 2006. "From the film room down to work ethic and everything of that nature. He really left me with some things that really touched me and stayed on my heart, as you can tell from this season."

"Williams wouldn't reveal the exact details of the talk, and Testaverde couldn't be reached on Wednesday. But quarterback Jake Delhomme believes Williams has benefited greatly from the advice of the 21-year veteran who was well known for being in top condition and well prepared for every game. Last year, Vinny talked to DeAngelo about that, about, 'Hey, when you practice, run. Finish runs,' " Delhomme said. "Because Vinny had all those years and knew how to prepare. He was a tireless worker. He prepared extremely hard. I thought it was great that Vinny did that, because obviously, he saw something in DeAngelo.

This year after every running play at practice, Williams runs all the way to the end zone, no matter where on the field the play started from. Williams acknowledged he worked harder in the offseason and is in better condition. He's stronger, too, which has made him harder to tackle.

Now try and read between the lines and tell me that Vinny didn't tell him to work harder and run harder. Stop while you are behind.

Can't wait to draft Lattimore in the 1st next year

Heck yeah, in case one of the others gets hurt we will be ready to roll?

<Steve Smith chimes in, "Hey guys, remember years ago when I mentioned I was ready to take a backseat and not have the load of being the #1 on my shoulders anymore? You know when I acknowledged I can't keep this up and we need a plan?>

Hurney then goes, "I got diss, we sign Lattimore and then I'll draft another App St QB and turn him into WR...it will work this time".

In fairness, that isnt Williams saying he wasn't giving max effort....just willing to take advice on how to get better and change his routine.

Coach/Player speak. Vinny might have taught him some things/took him under his wing, but I don't believe for a second D-Will wasn't giving it what he had. I've had people help me out on job,and it was helpful, but I was still giving 100%. I would have said similar things.

I said D-Will was a different runner in 08. Lot more power, little less burst. But he was still was better than Foster in 07, and he sure wasn't timid. And he didn't get his yards because Foster wore out the defense. That is the only time I've ever heard yards contributed to player like that before.

    • Man whether it's the Panthers or the Hornets it's crazy how many foolish talking heads there are in the local media. I just unsubscribed from locked on Hornets. Doug Branson with his cheesy mustache is an absolute clown especially when his partner isn't on. Talking about trading LaMelo because he can't win basketball games by himself with no semblance whatsoever of a legitimate Center. These YouTube personalities will say anything for a damn click.
    • I’m hoping for that exact same scenario, two seconds would be big for us. I’d hope for 3 impact players. A WR/DL/DE that can contribute like this current class would be key to our rebuild.
    • When I look at what I can find, a carryover problem from last season is our receivers are still unable to get enough separation on a consistent basis. Canales is certainly better at scheming them open, like how he sneaked out Thielen for a big play. But then he's also having Thielen running routes he frankly shouldn't be doing anymore. I feel part of the RZ issues is not really having anyone - after trading Diontae - who can make those quick cuts on a short field to give whoever is under center a wider window to throw. We also only have one guy with blazing speed in Thompkins and from what I could see, he's really used more to draw away coverage. I bring this all up because what Canales needs for sustained success - other than QB - is the other receiver pieces we'll be getting in the offseason.  Otherwise, I have to say that Canales isn't as afraid to be aggressive offensively. As others mentioned, still doesn't run the ball enough at times. Finally, I still feel his playcalls still doesn't line up with his mantra of getting rid of the ball within x amount of seconds. Maybe I count too slow. Oh, and I'm glad Canales first game after a bye looked good. I feared he'd be like Ron Rivera where we would fall flat on our faces.
