I remember the days of not having any good backs, to not having enough quality backs (to overcome injuries), and i don't want to see the panthers ever get back to that situation.

Our offense is the best it's been in a long time, and it's great to have it locked up for years.

Ben Dogra, Stewart's agent, said the deal is worth $36.5 million and could reach $42.5 million, with $22.5 million in guaranteed money....

But Dogra said talks about an extenion for Stewart began after last season. They were finalized about 90 minutes before Saturday's exhibition opener against Houston.

“Talks have been going on for quite a while. We all thought it was best to keep it under the radar,” Dogra said. “Jonathan loves being a Carolina Panther and wanted to explore the possibility he could stay there the rest of his career.”

...Dogra said the contract is structured as a four-year deal with a club option for a fifth year. Stewart will receive a $9 million signing bonus, and a $9 million option bonus the Panthers must exercise in the spring of 2014, Dogra said.

Dogra said the deal was designed to lessen the impact on the team's salary cap.
