Is this rude?

to clarify and expand on my original post on this. We see these folks on average about once every 3 years. My nephew wasnt texting anyone or checking on any million dollar deals or checking with his agent about anything - just random bs scrolling through favorties type of stuff. Earlier in the day when we all got together ( the one time every 2 or 3 years they come to our house) he showed his appreciation by pretending to be fall asleep after showing everyone how bored he was. Sorry but my folks would have jacked me up if Id done this even at 20 years of age which by the way I wouldnt have. total show of disrespect - in my book totally unacceptable.

The way I take this is:

A) It's not her home.

B ) It's not her place to correct the young man with his own parents sitting there.

C) He was just doing what he normally does and is acceptable in the comfort of his own home only to have a non-family member speak to him as if he was a child.

D) If it bothered her that much, she could've left the room.

A.

Was the grandparents home and after my gf spoke up they agreed with her.

B/C The father said something to the effect that my gf doesnt know teenagers very well, to which my gf responded that he isnt a teen ager anymore ( which he isnt at 20 years of age), hes a young man and should act like one. I agree even though I wouldnt have started a confrontation about it myself- there comes a point when its time to stop acting like a spoiled self centered child and become an adult

D. it was bothering everyone except for the parents - my gf was the only one that had the balls to say something about it. Besides - sometimes it takes a village to raise a child - right?

Meh. I mean, is it rude? That's subjective.

I'm kind of on the cusp of two generations; Gen X and the Whatever Generation (as I like to call them). As a result, I see both points of view.

In the context of traditional American etiquette, he might as well have taken a dump on the table.

But it's a brave new world, people. And in day-to-day, manners, this is acceptable. Part of it's generational, some of it's simply based on the technology and it's availabilty to the average person.

You can expend energy trying to 'correct' this kind of behaviour all you want, but is it really going to sink in? In the real world, your nephew now probably just sees your girlfriend as a meddling b!tch. And to make matters worse, smart money says that nothing was ultimately accomplished by her chatising him.

My guess is that you guys were indeed pretty boring, as older people tend to do (guilty as charged). And that maybe instead of treating him like an insolent child, you would have been better served by making an effort towards making him an important, active part of the conversation.

Yes its rude of him. I understand generation gaps, but when does a smartphone trump a family dinner that occurs every few yrs? It shouldnt. I do see what your saying Amsterdamn but we have to seperate whats important and whats not. How do we know what exactly went on and what was said....they could have been trying to include him, we all know how most kids at that age act.
