Is this rude?

or not? Had a visit with my sister and bil this past week - my nephew was with them - hes 20 yo and in college - he has the annoying habit of yanking out his cell phone as soon as we had finished meals at the table and thumbing through it - pretty much ignoring everyone else at the table. My gf finally had enough and called him on it - told him to put the phone away. I think his parents were a bit taken aback at her boldness.

Just wondering what passes for good etiquette these days or if any young people even have any.

I think its rude, personally. Sitting at a table ignoring the conversation(s) going on is rude no matter what it is you are doing. If its that important that you text someone, at least excuse yourself from the table and go into the other room.

I consider it rude if I am with family.

If I am eating out with friends however, we always have the phones on the table and ready to use.

True, esp. with family and most especially at holiday dinners.

If I'm with friends, a quick text or a check on a phone is fine.

It wouldn't be a problem if you guys were just more interesting.

I think there were words coming out of your mouth, but I was too busy texting to listen.

I always have my phone out at the table and look on Twitter, check scores etc. through the entire meal.

But, if there is conversation going on, especially directed towards me, it's on the table or in my lap and I'm in the conversation. As long as you're not going through your phone and ignoring what somebody is saying to you, I see no problem.
