It's looking more and more likely that Captain Munnerlyn will start again this season

Well one year is basically like 1/2 of Munnerlyn's entire body of work as a starter. It's not like we're isolating 2011 out of a 14 year career here.

But you are isolating a year with no DL pressure, no help from the Lbs or Ss in coverage.....in a new scheme, with no offseason....that is built on applying pressure which coaches admitted to abandoning.

The issue isn't whether Captain was bad in 2011 because he was. The issue is whether or not he is going to play better this year given the competition we brought in and the fact he knew his job was on the line. Really talking about last year is immaterial. It is all about this year not last. After Saturday night people might have something to say that is relevant based on how he does. Until then, not so much.

Until he shows me otherwise I think we should all just take a deep breath and say with one voice..."In Chico We Trust".

He will put who he thinks is best out there when the season starts.

I definitely have my serious doubts about Captain but, he is either "the guy" or maybe just "the guy right now".

Rivera has shown no indications of that good ole Foxie loyalty BS. If you don't produce, you gonna have a problem real quick. It's all good, we haven't even had our first pre-season game. This will take care of itself.

Godfrey was rated worse than Martin per PFF.....

With no pass rush and no coverage....why would teams look to push things and gamble throwing at Gamble? Throwing at Capt was smart....but his supporting cast aided in him being an easy target. He isn't great.... But better than the garbage some suggest

receivers caught 73% of the passes thrown at them while he was covering them. He was an easy target because he isn't very good. If he was better that catch rate would be a lot lower.

You're not considering that Munnerlyn has obvious physical limitations which make his ceiling as a player low. There's already a growing gap between WR talent and CB talent in this passing league and putting Munnerlyn in there as a starter is only exacerbating our problems in the secondary. It's easier to find ways to generate pressure in your defense if you're a good defensive coach than it is to try to develop Munnerlyn into a good starting cornerback.

True, but also why he was so bad means something.

He isn't the ideal CB....but if what we are doing around him improves....his good qualities can shine more and it can mask his weaknesses.

Scenario setup for a non ideal #2CB to be picked on and exploited. I have always acknowledged his height and physical limitations will hold him back.....

The slop around him was a factor....his style of play also fits with an aggressive D. His catch rate likely would be better with QB pressure, LBs and Ss doing there job in coverage and playing in a functioning JJ type 4-3.

Not pimping him as great, suggesting only that right NOW he certainly could be a better option than Norman or Hogan (who are rookies, I consider Hogan close to it, that are doing little besides watching)

Again it doesn't matter why he was bad any longer. He was bad, the defense was bad and that is ancient history. He has a chance to redeem himself and lets be honest, everyone loves a comeback story.

Well, why people suck does matter. It factors in whether they deserve a shot to prove they won't suck going forward IMO.

I think Captain deserves a shot...lack of other options also factors in.

What does that have to do with Captain. Maybe I missed the announcement where Clausen was listed as the number 2 quarterback and was likely to start like the Captain is.

You are just writing off last year like it means nothing. You can't just say he sucked last year and this year it'll be different because the past is the past. Just because someone is listed as a starter doesn't mean they are starter material. You should know that by watching any NFL game.
