SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- "If you could be any animal for two weeks, which one would you pick?"

Those were the very first words I heard when I stepped onto the practice field at Wofford College this past Friday. The question was posed by a smiling Cam Newton to fellow quarterback Derek Andersonas they warmed up for a sweltering afternoon practice at Carolina Panthers training camp.

If the pressure of a "sophomore slump" is weighing on the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, he sure does a great job of disguising it.

Here are five observations on Newton from my visit:

You dont think??? If Detroit didnt have Stafford and we traded Cam for Megatron straight up they would feel as if they were getting a steal. Cam for NO ONE

Anyone who trades an, even, mid level starting QB for a WR - I don't care who it is - is fuging retarded.

For two weeks? I'd be a jellyfish. Just floating in the ocean. That'd be fugging awesome.

Also, yeah, Cam to LaFell will be fun to watch. Almost as fun as floating in currents.

That's fine until you drift into the wrong current and wash up on the beach. First, little Johnny wanders over to prod you with his plastic sand shovel. He gets bored and you figure you're in the clear. Ah, but not so fast my gelatinous friend. Here come a few curious crabs, and they begin to take tentative nibbles of your tender flesh. Once again, you find reason for optimism, as something scares away the crabs. Suddenly, an indistinct shape casts a shadow over your little patch of sand. Your last conscious sensation is that of flight as you rise higher and higher...

Trust me. It would suck to be a jellyfish.

    • I call bullshit. Brady,Manning,Brees and Burrow are all just ball distributors. And the better thier supporting cast and more experience they got the better they got. Thier best attributes were between the ears.  Now I'm not saying Bryce is gonna turn into one of them but what I want is for him. Is to have a solid roster around him and some coaching continuity too see if he takes the next step. Because everything I've seen and read after the benching is that his mental toughness and workethic are what we need in a QB
    • Many criticize our picks in 2024. I believe that most of them were picked because their ceiling is better than those selected before them.  XLs needs to learn how to play in the NFL. Once he gets up to speed he'll be worthy of 32nd pick.  Brooks, showed why we took him in the few games he played. The ACL injury really sucks but he can overcome these setbacks. Remember TD had 3 ACLs and eventually will be in the ring of honor one day.  Wallace will be a solid LB going forward with experience  Sanders, TE is a tough position to play. He a getting valuable playing time and will become a good TE.  Going down the remaining draft pics all seem to have a good upside. They may not be showing much now but they will start showing their worth next season.
    • I think he's shown enough that if a QB fell to us at our pick we'd either draft a defensive player or trade down for more picks.
