Top QBs: Last 16 years

Your memory is pretty short. Moore is a perfect example of developing a guy to play in the NfL in a matter of weeks. He comes here without training camp and preseason, gets few if any reps until roughly 2 weeks before he actually starts and McCoy and Davidson work with him, pare down the playbook and manage the offense to give him a 2-1 record. While that doesn't mean he is a complete quarterback or even ready to start, they did a terrific job getting him ready. Now it is Scherer's turn and perhaps we should give him some time with Moore before we decide that we can't develop a quarterback over time. With the exception of Weinke, who stayed around long enough to even be developed?

Moore looked pretty good shortly after we got him. Last year during preseason he looked horrendous. Same thing with Basanez, who we had for several years.

Also, look at Jake, who we got as a FA. First regular season game, he leads us to a 2nd half comeback and takes us to the super bowl that year. Has he gotten better or worse since then? At the very best, I'd say the same.

Hopefully Scherer can do better, but we'll have to wait and see on that.

Yeah thats ONE possible QB they've developed since 2002. Good job.

Emphasis on possible. I'm still hopeful for Moore. That would be best case for the Panthers. Get our QB of the future without spending any draft picks.

Up until that point they thought Weinke was the guy. Didn't know he wasn't since Jake never was injured. In Weinke's spot duty against Detroit in 2005 he was very good. it wasn't until 2006 that he started and subsequently sucked. So we went out and got Carr. How many quarterbacks has Dallas developed in the past 6 years other than Romo? How about Atlanta or New Orleans or a dozen other teams. We aren't the exception to the rule, we are just like most other teams. Look at teams who have picked guys high like Russell, Leinert or Young. They have been developing them for years and they are still not ready to start in the league.

I can see using passer rating since that is more of a quality stat. But total passing yards has little to do with determining how well a quarterback is playing just how many times the team throws the ball

I only included passing yards as a control because some guys who threw for like 1800 yards snuck in the top ten in passer rating (i.e. Damon Huard). So guys who ranked in both categories played that much better since it's harder to sustain a rating while your throwing for 3600 yards than 1800.

So if we concentrate on passer rating it is interesting to note that in 2 out of the four past Superbowls, the winning quarterback was not in the top ten in passer rating. That includes Roethlesberger and Eli Manning So it begs the question as to whether you need a quarterback in the top 10 of passer ratings to get to the Superbowl. In 2003 we got there and Jake wasn't in the top 10 and Brady barely made it coming in at 10.

True. I noted that in the past ten years. However if you look at Roethlisberger's QB rating in the 2008 postseason is a marked improvement over his rating in the regular season (91 vs 80). Eli's margin is even wider at about 95 while his regular season rating was 74. Delhomme also tuned it up during our SB run, going from 80.5 to 106. ...which lends to my overall theory that good QB play is a critical element in sustaining a postseason run and you can't just rely on the running game and defense to bail you out all the time, because at some point, they will be neutralized and you will have to put the ball in the hands of the QB.

Yeah, this is exactly why I like the fact that we build the team by establishing a strong running game and solid defense. :D

As I said, who have we kept around long enough to develop? Moore is only in his third season and Basanez was here for only 2 years. Any quarterback coach will tell you it takes 3 years at least to develop a quarterback to start in this league. Any less than that is a distinct bonus. Guys like Ryan are the clear exception rather than the rule.

Plus both Moore and Basanez have been the third string guy which assures they develop slowly since they get very few reps and virtually none with the starters unless they start in a game due to injuries.

Your right about not needing an elite Qb, but relying on undrafted free agents and other teams cast-offs (what we've been doing) isn't the way to do it either. We should atleast make some kind of mid to late round investment on a guy and try to develop him. Like Matt Cassel.

Jake wasn't a castoff he was sitting on the bench mired behind a scrub QB named Aaron Brooks. New Orleans didn't want him to start. WE did. And he did great. More than once.

Matt Cassel was not all that great. Considering he had the same talent that Brady did and did a whole lot less with it. IF he was that great NE would have held onto him. Watch and see.

We are already developing a QB in Moore.

OK, lets get this through everybody's head so we can move on.

We didn't draft a QB this year. Delhomme, Moore, McCown, Cantwell are who will lead us this year and most likely in the future.

Stop dreaming about finding our GEM QB in any draft.

For whatever reason you want to choose you don't think Jake can do it. TOO BAD. The front office does. I Do, as well as many other Huddle fans. If you don't like it I am sure the Bucs can use a few more bandwagon fans for there New "Franchise QB" Freeman. Go drool over him.

I thought we had Basanez for 3 years? Maybe, I'm wrong on that. As for Moore, sure it's too early to completely judge him, but he looked significantly worse last year than soon after he got here. I thought it was pretty clear we sucked at developing QBs, hence the change in staff.

what's all this unrequited hostility for?

I have to side with Dave on this one. It's pretty annoying hearing all these "fans" throwing our QB, coach, FO and whoever else under the bus constantly. If you're actually going to be a fan, why don't you... I don't know... support your team. Not speaking to anyone specific here, we have alot of great fans, but some are pretty frustrating to listen to.

I mean we come off a 12-4 season, have one of the best OLines, best 1-2 running back punch, a top 5 (probably #2) WR. But yet I hear alot of people saying we have to get an elite QB (along with everything else) or we are going to suck. If you listen to some of these "fans" you would think we went 0-16 last season.

As a comparison, I think it gets to the point where, people don't understand just how some other teams' fans work. Giants fans are pissed, yea they went 12-4, they even went to win the big game the year before but they got embarrassed in their home field (not even as bad as us btw) and it left a sour taste in their mouths.

Half of our fans are probably just happy we made the playoffs. ....kind of setting the bar low. It becomes a point where the whole "glass half full" lifestyle becomes bloated, and people are just quick to write off any inadequacy with excuses or just plain avoidance.

There are no hostilities here. Just Facts.

Jake is our QB

Cantwell and will fight the loser of the # 2 spot between McCown and Moore.

Plain and Simple.

We aren't gonna draft a QB in the 1st round this year or next. I am sure in latter rounds we might but for now that is who we have.

No need in beating a dead horse :beatdeadhorse5: over the whining and crying over a drafted QB. NOT GONNA HAPPEN

I was more than a little disappointed with our playoff performance, but at the same time I know we still have a very good team. Jake is alot better than what he showed in that game. Our D has a ton of talent and a new competent coordinator. Our run game is an absolute beast. No reason to give up hope or call for people's heads. The sky is not falling.
