Godfrey "Secondary Will Be Better"

Recommended Posts

"Go back in history"......yep there's your problem. According to multiple stats and sites, Gamble was the 2nd best corner in all of the NFL last year. Yes Gamble makes more than Deion Sanders did, but contracts go up each year. Gamble is getting paid a very reasonable contract, considering his production, when compared to other top corners in the league.

I was going to say about the same thing, but you pretty much hit it. Gamble was #2 in the league in what is (in my opinion the most important stat for a CB), yards per target, or whatever they call it. I think Revis was #1 allowing the fewest yards to opposing WR per target, and one could argue Gamble faced better WRs last year. The best WRs Revis faced (just picking #1 receivers on teams he played, I don't know for fact who he covered each game) were Dez Bryant, Brandon Marshall (twice), Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe and Hakeem Nicks. Don't think he was covering Wes Welker since he's not a #1 receiver, but you could add him to the list if you want. Those are the only guys that I'd consider close to elite that he covered. Gamble faced Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Roddy White (twice), Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne. Yea, the level of competition there definitely skews it in favor of Gamble in my opinion...

Bottom line, Chris Gamble isn't overpaid. He's probably the 2nd most important player on our defense, behind Beason.

I found it very interesting that Nakamura has gone out with the starters in team drills the last 3 days. This does not bode well for Martin.

As to our secondary overall, as long as Captain is not at #2 again, we should see improvement. I honestly feel Capt was outplayed by every other CB that saw the field last year, including #25.

Someone mentioned Pugh. He is a better player than people give him credit for, especially against the run.

A lot will depend on our pass rush, but like Godfrey, I expect significant improvement.

Depends on how you look at it....if you look at last year Gamble was underpaid.

The year before that, drastically overpaid.

Gamble was paid to play like 2011 Gamble and hasn't done that for the bulk of his deal.

Well said.

Godfrey and Gamble are the only 2 I can count on. Too many injuries with our CBs, although I do like Norman's length.

Who knows? Maybe, Martin has a comeback year but I doubt it. I am looking for someone to fill that FS with consistent play. Hopefully Reggie Smith. But I think we should go after another OU FS in this years draft, Tony Jefferson.

Gamble was overpaid for the 2010 season, I blame that on a completely dysfunctional season from top to bottom. The entire team was overpaid in 2010 from Fox to Hurney to the waterboy. The rest of the contract, I don't think he's been overpaid. Certainly not the bulk of it. Last year might have been his best statistical year, but he's always been a great cover guy. He's no Asomugha or Revis, (and he's never been paid like them) but he's been just a step below them. Guys like that don't get the flashy stat. In my opinion, other than 2010 he's lived up to his deal, and last year far outplayed it.

By all account, Nakamura has already solidified his spot as the starting FS.

Oh nice. I haven't been keeping up to date with training camp news. Whoever wins that position, I am sure deserves it. Rivera doesn't play favorites or favor seniority. We can't afford to have poor play from our FS position like we did last year.
