Anderson phrases the return of Ron Edwards

I know many here have not placed stock in what Ron Edwards brings to our defense.I for one think his return will pay dividends in our stopping the run and LB play.This article is from the Charlotte Disturber.

I do think he'll be a difference maker just by consuming blockers.

As long as he doesn't get pushed into the LB, that's improvement.

Hoping R.E. comes in and makes a big impact this year. If our linebackers can stay clean then we are going to be a force this year on both sides of the ball.

Edwards is, at best, an average NT. That said, that's light years ahead of what we had last year. If he can just be average this year we'll see a marked improvement with the linebacker situation much stronger.

Edwards will be able to stuff both A gaps against the run and handle two blockers. That will be huge for us given the problems we had last year. Suddenly the linebackers can flow to the ball unimpeded and be fine making plays to the outside knowing that the middle is clogged so the cutback lanes won't be so available. Linebackers can blitz not being worried about leaving a gap uncovered which the offense can exploit for 10 or 15 yards up the middle on a run. Safeties don't have to overplay the run which makes them vulnerable to play action passing and can defend the deep pass. Corners can be more aggressive and play more man coverage instead of sitting back in passive zone coverage to help protect the edges against the run.

I am not saying that singlehandedly Edwards will change the whole defense, but having or not having a solid run defense does impact the rest of the play of the defense significantly.

he pretty much has to accomplish 2 things...

1) don't suck

2) don't get hurt

if he can do that then the defense will be a lot better.

The way I see it the success of our defense hinges on our CB #2 and DT #2. I just pray that someone steps up to play at a high level at both positions.
