DT Larry Tripplett was a key signing in Free Agency as Panthers look to rebuild D-Line

CHARLOTTE, NC- In a Free Agency that saw WR Chad Johnson not picked back up the Cincinnati Bengals, some Carolina fans were thinking about how sweet it would be to see superstars Johnson and Steve Smith reunited from their Junior College days. There was, in fact, some speculation that the Panthers would go out and try to snag Johnson, but Johnson eventually signed with Cincinnati's arch rivals, the Cleveland Browns (who will be Super Bowl favorites with their dynamic offensive weapons in 2009).

Instead, the Panthers took a more conservative approach to this year's free agency. The Panthers went in not having many weaknesses, but it was clear that the Panthers were going to look to rebuild the D-Line back to it's dominant status of just a few seasons ago. To do that, the Panthers signed DT Larry Tripplett, 30, to a 3Y/ $7.00M deal with a $2.43M signing bonus. Tripplett, who rarely played while at Buffalo last year, will likely sub in on passing downs for Ma'ake Kemoeatu, much the same way that Pro Bowler Damione Lewis did during his first year at Carolina. The Panthers also added the promising DT Lajuan Ramsey, 25, to a 5Y/$9.65M contract with a $2.40M signing bonus. Ramsey is a strong run stuffer who hasn't had much a chance yet during his career thus far, but has shown promis with his strength and tackling ability.

On offense, the Panthers found their replacement for retired John Kasay with the signing of K Dave Rayner, 26, who played for Green Bay last year. Rayner signed a 3Y/2.07M deal with a $270K signing bonus. Rayner has been on and off with his accuracy (51/72 career) but has a monster leg. The Panthers also added RB Michael Bennett, a long time member of arch rival Tampa Bay. Bennett, 31, signed a 2Y/ $990K contract with a $340K signing bonus. He will likely return kicks as Jonathan Stewart moves into the primary
