Rivera and McDermott comment on how much they will use the 3-4

most teams play out of their base formations something like 40% of the time as a league-wide average... base defenses are important to consider, but considering us a 4-3 defense is ridic. rivera and mcdermott will switch it up (and i would question their coaching acumen if they gave actual insight away in interviews.)

the point being, every team in the league often strays from its base set, so the coaches are likely commenting on this out of a necessity born of fan-based reaction to speculation rather than out of a genuine expression of fundamentally-altered defensive philosophy.

If they do intend to switch full time to a 3-4, we won't know about it until they do it. They're not going to announce it and basically let all the players know they're lame ducks to be traded away if they don't fit the scheme. They'll slowly build the roster and playbook to what they want.

I think the only thing meant is they will switch up from the base 4-3 to confuse the offense.I see no indication they are changing the base.I think what you will see is multiple looks with blitz package from the lbs and dbs to try to get additional pressure on the opposing qb.

"Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott estimates the Panthers used the 3-4 defense about 25 percent of the time in 2012.

But he hinted that number could increase this year."

From Steve Reed::

“I definitely wouldn’t want to do all of 3-4 or even all of 4-3,” Beason said. “I think being able to change it up throws curveballs at the offense and they can’t dictate to us. We can change some things up. I think being able to play both makes us real tricky on defense.”

Defensive end Charles Johnson, Carolina’s highest-paid player, would see action as a pass-rushing outside linebacker in the 3-4 as he did a year ago.

He likes that idea.

“In the 3-4 you generally blitz a lot, so hopefully we can dial up a lot of blitzes and stuff out of that package,” Johnson said.

The Panthers started off well in Sunday night’s first training camp practice, coming up with four interceptions during 11-on-11 team drills against the offense.

I would be interested in opinions to the personal we will use and the position they will play.

I assume Ron Edwards would be NT and Beason and Luke would be inside.I know Applewhite can play OLB and assume CJ and Hardy can be DEs though I did see CJ dropping back last year.

Maybe I am confused but how do we not have our version of James Harrison if they are going to put Charles Johnson in there as an OLB. I would think he is our version of James Harrison.

harrison can rush the passer or drop back into zone coverage but also covers rb's & te's in single coverage. CJ can drop back into zone but doubt we would want to single him up much. IMO no matter how we line up, the basic principles of the defense will be a 4-3 under with some tweaks based on what our personnel can do.

Outside of situational 3-4 looks neither Johnson nor Hardy are 3-4 DEs.
