That's why you always inspect a room before renting it...If a hotel wont allow you to inspect the room beforehand then find another hotel.

I have been traveling the US and staying in hotels since I graduated college in 1997, and I have never sat on a hotel couch.

Check out immediately, there's nothing nastier than a nasty hotel.

Go find a nearby business park, pick out the biggest company you can find, then see what decent hotels are in the vicinity, go to one and tell them you're with that company. That will get you a really good rate 90% of the time.

Also, if you are traveling to Chicago, Vegas, Orlando, etc. Always check to see if there is a big trade show in town. You can go to their websites and get great hotel rates.
