Rivera expects Bell to start at right tackle (Also other Tidbits)

Recommended Posts

I actually thought he tried to get into Otah's head early on...Bell for some early praise and would put the two in the same sentence.

Specific players aside, Rivera said lots of positives about the DL, LBs, and secondary...don't think all that is actually what Rivera sees as fact. He needs some to get better. He can't call it like it is and be a good coach can he?

He also said he was impressed by our safeties when he first came here.I think he tries to pump some guys up but when that does not work he is very blunt..

With all the bad we saw last year, can you recall him actually talking bad about how anyone played.....without deflecting the reason to a collective issue elsewhere?

Was not trying to downplay his ability as he has played well in the past. But, for me, I would rather he be depth. He can play both G, and C, that is huge. I guess he can slide over to C and we can plug in the G. I would just prefer he be depth not a starter. We have a ton of guys vieing for starter minutes, i just want one of them to beat out Hangman. Makes us better as a team, and makes me happy. Win win.

But hey, having been married for over 20 years I am used to not getting my own way.

Before last season I would agree but last year he was a better than average guard. He's smart and experienced and who would challenge him? Pollack is the only possible challenger that I can see and he is pretty awful.

I do not want Pollack starting either. I do not trust him one little bit. Williams was in consideration last year, before getting injured. Maybe he can regain his form, or even improves. Anything to give me hope that Hangman will not start.

I love his depth. If we can find a starter it just makes us better. But, if worse case is Hangman starting, I can live with that.

If Bell played at New Mexico, that would explain his suckage, that team has been historically bad the last few years. Maybe with real coaching he will improve greatly. Lord knows he didn't get much coaching in college.

did you even watch Bell played last season?

quit reading stupid articles and stats and start watching some games.

Urlacher was from New Mexico buddy

Gross gave up 5.5 sacks his rookie year. I guess he was destined to suck right??

Kalil gave up 3 sacks in only 6 games his rookie year so I guess he was destined to suck as well.

Pro football weekly says Bell gave up 4.75 (how do you 3/4 of a sack?) sacks and had 11 penalties not 14. I wonder who is right??

As for other rookie right tackles that started, Tyron Smith for Dallas who was taken in the first round at number 9 gave up 7 penalties and 9.5 sacks in 2011.

So no they didn't all play better.

Tyron Smith gave up 21 hurries and 1 hit as opposed to Bell who had 24 hurries and seven hits while playing over 200 less snaps then Smith.

Bell was better then several players. But Smith wasnt one of them.

I live in Alabama, I watched as much panthers football as I could. Which wasn't much. No I did not watch Bell specifically. I would not be qualified to professionally evaluate any football player especially a lineman, well maybe a kicker.

2nd, Urlacher's New Mexico was a hell of a lot different from Bell's.

Urlacher finished as an All-American and was drafted in the first round. Bell was a freshman All-american Hon Mention and was undrafted. You do the math.

3rd I actually believe Bell can get better, with the help of the Panthers coaching staff. Now next time read and comprehend, I wasn't slamming the kid.

Here is an easier question....name two Bell was better than.

Jeremy Trublood of Tampa He gave up four sacks, five hits and 50 hurries. In 962 snaps.

Jamal Brown nine sacks, five hits and 29 hurries. In 785 snaps.

And theres more then those two. As bad as he was, you could do worse.

Maybe someone can make better sense of this...but if you take a look at the 2nd chart, it breaks down each teams' success in the run game according to the direction they ran the ball. Panthers were 2nd in the league when running the ball towards the LE (which is primarily who Bell is blocking as the RT). When the chart says "Left End" and "Right End", I'm not exactly sure if it's talking about from the perspective of the o-line or d-line, but either way...Panthers are 1st/2nd when rushing outside to the right or left. I know it's foolish to give Bell all the credit there, but that has to show he's pretty decent in the run game at the very least. I know the TE is usually lined up next to the RT so he'd help as well, but Olsen was never really known as a good blocker anyways. Then obviously you have to give credit to our running backs for making plays on their own, but the data has to at least be promising. It's hard to gather statistics on offensive linemen in the run game, so I'd imagine this is about as close as you can get to measuring their efficiency.
