Rivera expects Bell to start at right tackle (Also other Tidbits)

Recommended Posts

No offseason... UD free agent... Ryan Kalil at G his rookie year was horrendous... Offsides penalties and holding calls are mental errors that should be improved upon and not duplicated...so improvement on Bell's part should be a given..Garry Williams was decent as well..RT is fine.

I like Bell because of his story and his background but only homers would say that Bell even played average last year. I know he was a UDFA but averaging a penalty a game is hardly something that any NFL starter should be capable of.

I like Garry Williams and I believe he could work out for a season or two but I don't see him as the long term solution to the right tackle dilemma.

What I am hoping is that Bruce Campbell is able to win the starting job. From everything that I have read, Campbell seems a lot like Silatolu; in my opinion. I keep reading that he has a high motor, he is very physical, and highly versatile. The versatility caught my eye because for the the past two seasons he had been playing guard for the Raiders when many scouts thought that he was better suited for the tackle position. So though Campbell may be versatile, in the long run he was/is better suited for the right tackle position. I blame Campbell's demise on Tom Cable and Hue Jackson because I remember watching Campbell at Maryland and he was a really good player; some thought he was a top ten prospect. I personally believe that once Bruce becomes accustom to playing the tackle position again that he will ultimately be the Panthers starting right tackle.

Campbell? He was being taught by Tom Cable an OLINE himself. Dnt blame the coaches. He has four or five years under his sleeves. If he could pan out, he would've long time ago.

This was the same dude that what? Couldn't learn how to play RT so they move him to G. Let's not forget.

And people are bashing Bell a rookie last year that played very well but are raising the torch to this guy. Dnt get me wrong I want to see Campbell succeed as much as anybody too but this is laughable. Bell will be the starting RT for the whole season unless he gets injured.

This is like saying Dwayne Jarrett should get the no.2 WR over Gettis. Gettis showed he could play his rookie year but this and that with him. But I remember how good Jarrett was at USC and its bc Fox's staff that Jarret never reach his potential. Get my point? Yeah

Let's be happy with what we have. Some teams are struggling to find a RT for their team.

Tom Cable was an awful coach, just because you can play doesn't mean you can coach.

Matt Doherty is the perfect example, followed by Tom Cable.

There are countless others.

You have been told already what Campbell's case was, and the video that was posted in the other thread should speak for itself on what Campbell is capable of.

First off, the five sacks that Bell allowed was by far the most by any Panthers offensive lineman, now five sacks isn't bad for a rookie; but fourteen penalties is blatantly horrendous. As far as other rookie right tackle's, I would say most that started played better than Bell.

Most of those starting RT were 1st rounders. Bell may have gave up more sacks compare to them due to having a rookie QB in Cam too. And especially with him being back there longer than other QBs like Brady for Solder.

All I hear and see is being capable of. If he was a rookie, I wouldve probably believe it. But dude been in the league for years and haven't done anything. He probably hasn't even had a season as good as Bell's .

There are so many things wrong with this post...

First off, like I said before just because you can play doesn't mean you can coach. There are countless examples of good football players that couldn't/can't coach... Mike Singletary, Bart Starr, Art Shell, Jim Zorn etc... By the way they were all better players and coaches than Cable.

Secondly, this will be Campbell's third season; not his fourth or fifth season.

Thirdly, I noticed you keep saying that he couldn't learn to play right tackle. I don't know where you keep getting that from, but you are dead wrong. The Raiders needed a guard and Campbell was the best offensive lineman on the board overall, so they decided to convert him to guard. He was rated as one of the best tackle's overall by Kiper and other draft experts.

Also comparing to positions (in right tackle and wide receiver) is laughable. Even more laughable is comparing David Gettis' rookie season to Byron Bell's rookie season.

Gross gave up 5.5 sacks his rookie year. I guess he was destined to suck right??

Kalil gave up 3 sacks in only 6 games his rookie year so I guess he was destined to suck as well.

Pro football weekly says Bell gave up 4.75 (how do you 3/4 of a sack?) sacks and had 11 penalties not 14. I wonder who is right??

As for other rookie right tackles that started, Tyron Smith for Dallas who was taken in the first round at number 9 gave up 7 penalties and 9.5 sacks in 2011.

So no they didn't all play better.

Since you didn't read my post, I said the five sacks wasn't bad. It was the penalties.

But thanks for putting words in my mouth, typical huddler.

Also, I am going by what Reed said because he actually follows the Panthers.

I did read it and I saw what you said about 5 sacks. The penalties were a problem but 5 of the 11 were 5 yard penalties not huge ones and 5 were holding. Surely not good but certainly not as bad as you make them out to be given that he had a number of games with no penalties.

Truth is he wasn't that bad and I showed you a rookie top 10 pick at right tackle who was worse.

And I don't know where Reed gets his info, but you see my source posted.

Bottom line is you were wrong and like a typical huddler you don't admit it.

Not really, because he brought up Otah numerous times. Over any-other player at that time.

Perception is what you choose to see. At that point Otah was practicing and even started for us. Well the rest is history but if you didn't see Rivera call him out at OTAs you missed his message.
