Rivera expects Bell to start at right tackle (Also other Tidbits)

Recommended Posts

BELL PLAYED GREAT LAST SEASON!!!!

one bad game against Bowers and all these haters going all up his @ss.

Give the kid kudos, he played extremely well last season.

He was 4th in the league in penalties (in 12 starts) and got beat routinely....and they were forced to give him help. That isn't great nor extremely well...nor did all that bad play come against Bowers.

Come on bro. The "hate" is largely a product of the extreme homeristc inflation of what he was

Rivera has praised Bell, Fua, McClain, Captain, defended both S all at various stages. maybe it is just positive motivation bc he simply needs them not to suck? That does exist. Coaches do try to get in players heads.

He sure didnt try to get into Otah's head and he needed him at the time. Or was Otah just too smart for all that.

Agreed. He also never said anything about Otah until after they traded him... And my wife just interrupted me and I forgot where I was going with that... Sorry

1.) I doubt anyone here knows how to grade tackles. There's more to the position than sacks and pressures given up, and the QB is primarily responsible for being sacked. Notice how Peyton Manning is a statue but avoids sacks incredibly well.

2.) Otah was never all that good of a pass-blocker, anyways. His monster run blocking covered his weakness in pass protection.

3.) Bell improved as the season went on, and considering the fact that he went from laying carpet to starting on a top five offense shows he can handle the work it takes to improve.

We'll be fine.

I actually thought he tried to get into Otah's head early on...Bell for some early praise and would put the two in the same sentence.

Specific players aside, Rivera said lots of positives about the DL, LBs, and secondary...don't think all that is actually what Rivera sees as fact. He needs some to get better. He can't call it like it is and be a good coach can he?

I like Bell because of his story and his background but only homers would say that Bell even played average last year. I know he was a UDFA but averaging a penalty a game is hardly something that any NFL starter should be capable of.

I like Garry Williams and I believe he could work out for a season or two but I don't see him as the long term solution to the right tackle dilemma.

What I am hoping is that Bruce Campbell is able to win the starting job. From everything that I have read, Campbell seems a lot like Silatolu; in my opinion. I keep reading that he has a high motor, he is very physical, and highly versatile. The versatility caught my eye because for the the past two seasons he had been playing guard for the Raiders when many scouts thought that he was better suited for the tackle position. So though Campbell may be versatile, in the long run he was/is better suited for the right tackle position. I blame Campbell's demise on Tom Cable and Hue Jackson because I remember watching Campbell at Maryland and he was a really good player; some thought he was a top ten prospect. I personally believe that once Bruce becomes accustom to playing the tackle position again that he will ultimately be the Panthers starting right tackle.

Lets forget what Rivera said. Lets forget that by all accounts he did a good job given he was thrust into a starting role without the benefit of playing with the 1s in camp and having an off-season.

He sucks because you said so and he is a just a guy right???

He gave up 5 sacks in 12 starts which was not that many. Sure he had penalties but again that was all part of the learning curve with a rookie thrown into the fire.

He will be much improved this year just because he had 12 starts and has played with the 1s for the better part of the season.

I agree with Rivera in that he will be expected to play this year at a high level whether he starts or rotates in. Either way the only person who thinks he sucks is you. And I take Rivera'a opinion over yours.

How many rookie right tackles played better than him last year?? He played well for a rookie. As the year went along he got much better and his penalties went down. Many of his mistakes were in the first half of the year where you expect them to be.

At this point Bell is the starter until someone unseats him. It would be great for WIlliams or Campbell to come in and start as that means we have more than one starting option at RT in the event of injuries.

As for Campbell he has tremendous potential but that is all it is at this point. He has done nothing to prove he will be better than Bell. I hope he has a great camp and really shows everyone why we traded for him, but until then, dumping on Bell doesn't benefit Campbell either.

First off, the five sacks that Bell allowed was by far the most by any Panthers offensive lineman, now five sacks isn't bad for a rookie; but fourteen penalties is blatantly horrendous. As far as other rookie right tackle's, I would say most that started played better than Bell.
