Panthers Switching to 3-4 Defense...

I'd prefer them to perfect the Jim Johnston 4-3 defense than to dabble in the 3-4.

that's fair, though for all real purposes you're just standing up a right end, moving the three other linemen over, and putting the SLB (that historically has been another end subbed in) on the line. I guess they could leave the 3 actual LB in and just stand up Johnson as well, but I don't see Anderson or Kuechly as a good fit.

No. NT does not mean two-gap. Our NTs do not control the center and flow, they have a gap like everyone else. Note that they're not head up, either.

And no, 3 tech and 5 tech are not two gap necessarily either. We are a one gap team.

As for the other posts about Edwards, he's pretty big compared to where he was coming out - 293 (and a somewhat impressive 4.83 40). But he wasn't really that explosive, so he gained weight I'm assuming to become more solid at the point of attack. He wasn't that good a fit in Crennel's two-gap 3-4 but he was solid for them in 2010.

I can't tell you exactly what McDermott will run this year and last year was a disaster. He will primarily run a 1 gap scheme using the 4-3 but could opt for 1 gap or 2 gap or a hybrid combination when they go to a 3-4 scheme. But I do know under Fox especially when we had Kemo, he was responsible for both A gaps on run plays . He lined up on the outside shoulder of the center but not in the gap which is still defined as the 0 technique. He had a 1 gap assignment on pass rush assignments but was usually replaced for someone who could actually get penetration. I already said that in a 3 and 5 technique it is by definition a 1 gap assignment. If it were a 2 gap assignment, for example, the DEs would be lined up over the tackle in a 4 technique.

Kuechly not a good fit for what?? An inside LB which is where many people projected him in the draft or on the outside?? In a 3-4 he wouldn't be on the outside.

I was talking about the outside. Of course he's not a good fit there, but I was discussing why I felt like they would end up subbing someone out for a rusher.

p55, fair enough, I'm not going back and forth on whatever this is. I don't believe there will be any level of hybrid with two gaps and don't feel like continuing to argue the current or past defenses.

3-4 vs pro offences and 3-4 vs spread teams are different. There are alot of college teams that dont have a traditional 3-4 scheme with their D(Wake Forest). Im not saying we are switching fully to a 3-4 but just that the NFL is starting to mimick the spread type offences of the college ranks.

Why would anyone even consider discussing him on the outside? Anyone who knows anything about a 3-4 knows they either use OLBs who rush like a Harrison and are essentially an extra linemen or use a guy like Von Miller. Kuechly is like neither of them. We have guys like Applewhite or Tucker who would rotate in there if we didn't go with Hardy.

As for the back and forth, you were the one who jumped in telling us all about where we were wrong. I just responded. I don't remember doing the arguing here so if you let it go I surely will.

I was saying the same thing, so I don't know why you're correcting me.

And yes, you were wrong. I'm sorry if that came across the wrong way, but you were specifically talking about two gap, which this isn't. People make that mistake often with the 3-4, and it's not what's happening here.

I was talking about the 3-4 and using a potential 2 gap scheme not the 4-3 which is a 1 gap scheme with the exception I noted. As for being wrong, given we haven't installed a 3-4 yet how can I be wrong about something that hasn't happened. Unless you are Kreskin and can predict the future how do you know what we are going to do until we do it??? You are speculating we will use a 1 gap 3-4 scheme based on what Rivera did in San Diego but until we see what happens you aren't right either. So please stop with the whole It isn't happening here unless you are on the defensive staff or are Nostradamus.

OK, you're 100% correct. Even though we have no two gap personnel at all and not a single coach on our roster has ever taught it, it's possible they could run a two gap scheme, or trot eleven defensive linemen in one gap if that makes you happier.

Obviously it means a lot to you to be right or you wouldn't keep going back and forth and arguing after saying you weren't. Honestly I don't know why you care so much since we aren't installing a 3-4 at all. It was all speculation until you came in and decided to act like like a know it all..

Lighten up Francis.......
