WR Louis Murphy Traded to Panthers!

Wow. Had been busy all day and just checked the huddle... I kept reading about how we gave up a pick for Murphy in a trade in the Otah thread. I kept racking my brain thinking we traded for a punter or something earlier in the offseason.

Exit the Otah Thread and see this one.

This is an awesome move. Dude is an incredible athlete and had a pretty good rookie year but I was wondering what happened to him last year.

For those saying he's inconsistent after 2 years, I wouldn't worry... He was playing for Oakland and they haven't exactly been a model of consistency over the years, especially in regards to QBs. I don't know what happened to him last year, but he showed out a few times a rookie and has HUGE potential.

I love this trade but I do wonder what the motivation was behind it.

Doubt we'd trade anything for a #6 WR, especially when we have about 40 going into camp.

This is competition for the #3.

Should of worded it differently. He'll complete our 6 reciever corps.

Smith

LaFell

Gettis

Murphy

Pilares/Adams and Smith for the slot position.

i've seen this in so many posts, where does the love for pilares at WR come from? yes he did OK as a returner nothing special IMO, but we have seen nothing at WR. nothing at all or you are counting the catch in preseason?

i think we got another WR because we are scared that Gettis will not return to form, resulting into having no #3 WR.

  1. Smith
  2. LaFell

decent gap

3: Gettis (?) / Murphy (?)

huge gap

4 : Everyone else with anyone with experience being the leader of this pack

This is but one of my post. I don't have a lot of love for Pilares, that's why I placed him under #3 or #4 WR position. Given the contribution that he had, and a full season under his belt, I don't see us getting rid of him unless another WR shows him up. And even then, the other WR will have to be able to contribute on ST as well. My post is only going by what WR we have on the roster. I'd like to see your list of WR that we'll take into 2013.

Conditional late rounders are win-win even if the guy plays like crap so I'm easy.

Worst case: Murphy sucks, Gettis takes some time to get to100%, and we lose a 7th...meanwhile we still have Olsen, LaFell, Smitty, Tolbert, & J-Stew for the passing game at the very least. We should still produce a little bit of offense methinks.

Best case: We get a 24 year old kid who can become a solid 2/3 WR, Gettis comes back quick and plays well...then we have Smitty-LaFell-Gettis-Murphy-Adams...we're good here for the time being

Put this in the other Murphy thread, but I'll drop it here as well.

Just did some reading on Murphy and apparently his recent injuries have been a sports hernia he had to have surgery on that kept him out of TC and the first 5 games of 2011, a pulled groin that made him miss a couple games later in the season, and then a hamstring that kept him out of OTAs.

Sounds like a series of freak accidents to me. I'd much rather have that than a Jeff Otah type chronic condition.

My impression of Murphy, from what I've seen of him: tall, fast in a straight line, tough and willing blocker, not a smooth and natural catcher of the ball, resembles a track athlete playing football more than a natural football player, frustrated by press coverage at times, somewhat sloppy running routes. Doesn't play special teams, which could hurt his chances of making the roster if it's a close battle with Pilares or AE. Raiders liked to give him the ball on reverses, despite the fact that he doesn't seem to posses natural instincts as a runner. I think he has potential as a slot reciever. Reminds me more of Drew Carter than Gettis. Presents a tough matchup for defenses because of his size/speed combo.
