Chargers set to release Luis Castillo again

For the second time this offseason, the Chargers are releasing defensive end Luis Castillo.

Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego tweeted out the news a few moments ago.

The Chargers let Castillo go in March for financial reasons, since he was supposed to make $3.9 million with a $1 million roster bonus. But they re-signed the former first-round pick in April for one year, with a minimum base salary of $825,000.

The Chargers are solid at the position, with Corey Liuget, rookie Kendall Reyes, Vaughn Martin and Jacques Cesaire providing plenty of depth.

Castillo only played one game last year before breaking his leg. Despite that, he visited Kansas City and New England during his month of unemployment, indicating there may be a market for him now.

Should we take a look?

hmm...I doubt we jump on any FAs at any position for the time being but this wouldn't necessarily be a bad move

oh and I fully expect this thread to fill up with: Blah blah why do we make threads on every released player...yada yada :)

The San Diego/Rivera ties make it a possibility. But I really think we're trying to keep this team (especially the D) as healthy and youthful as possible.

that is dirty

cut loose because you were due a 1 mill check and a 4 mill salary only to be brought back a month later of 800k

It's easy to demonize these guys when they are negotiating contracts, holding out, getting paid while on IR, etc and then you hear something like this which I can only assume is common practice.
