So much for re-signing Shirley...

I never understood why we released Shirley...

I guess the Panthers felt that they really had no need for him or they wanted to find an upgrade in the draft or during cut time during TC. Their is no telling why. Maybe they are hoping Edwards will show up this year and be a very solid DT this year for us. Who knows right now.

In 2001, the defensive line wasn't really considered a strength of the Panthers, and the Panthers were 31st in the league on defense (out of 31 teams). Between 2001 and 2002, the main addition on defense was Julius Peppers. Kris Jenkins wasn't looked at as anything special at the time (maturity and desire questions), but in the words of a former teammate, the light came on for him in training camp his second year. Working beside Buckner helped him get his head straight. The line was a big reason why we went from 31st on D to 2nd in 2002--they improved that much.

I'm not saying that McLain or Fua or anyone is going to do what Jenks did, and we didn't exactly draft another Julius Peppers, but there's a lot to be optimistic about. For one, even if he's old Edwards is going to bring a steadying veteran presence to the interior of the line (similar to Buckner). Whoever plays next to him won't be trying to adjust to the NFL, they'll have a year under their belt. There will be a vocal and strong linebacking corps behind them, so there shouldn't be any question on where they should be or what they should be doing on a given play. And, of course, the improved linebacker play will help cover for their mistakes.

I doubt we're going to be a top ten defense this year, but we should improve a ton. And we're going to be a lot better whether or not we have a guy who was signed to be a backup on the Colts interior. How much is anyone's guess. No use crying about it in July.

not trying to go in circles, but outside of marcell dareus, all of the DTs from last years draft were picked bpa.

imo, the talent is about the same.

Dareus?

That is your opinion but I believe the DT talent in 2013 is much better than 2012. That's the thing about the draft you see blue but I could see green.

The doom and gloom realists are the only ones overly concerned about the DT positon. The rest of us see Edwards as a viable option, enough so, that we see stability and growth on the D-line. When you use third round picks on a guy(s), you have to give them time. It is not the consenus number one option, especially with madden gms, but it is the plan our leaders have chosen.

The curse of being young. The good news. Next year, the vast majority of these guys are going to be called vets. That is when we will know who we are. Still too damm early to make hasty decisions as to our young talent.

We are on the verge of elite status, and are only in year two. Now who is being unreasonable? Us homerz who see the road paved with potential, and are excited for the ride? Or the debby downers and randy reaslist who claim the road is too bumpy, because we don't have a quality support system in place yet?

Giddy the F up guys. And GOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • The qb position has been eliminated due to the low probability of the success of selecting one early.  This part got me hollering the most "You can't get so hyperfocused on one position(even the most important position in football like QB) that you just draft a QB and any QB. This leads to wasted draft picks and years of torment as you are stuck in a development cycle for nothing." "Also, if we don't get our franchise QB this draft....oh well. We got the next dozen or so drafts to keep taking cracks at it."
    • Then be prepared to draft a QB the next year. When the best one would surely not play here. Then what?   This fanbase keeps preaching patience, while other bottom feeders are finding their QB's. Panthers fans are becoming blind. The losing has caught up to the fanbase. We preaching patience when we have been a bad franchise ever since Tepper took over.   But because you don't like Sanders or Ward we should pass on a QB. Then when they become franchise changers you feel bad.   Everyone knows this franchise will continue to suck until they get a franchise QB. Chasing LBs and DEs isn't helping us. We can address the defense after we get the QB.   Cmon Hepcat don't let the blind lead you they blind for a reason!
    • Imagine posting on a forum to mock people for posting on a forum. Whether you realize it or not you just played yourself. LOL  Guess what? We've heard people like you lecture people with opinions about how *insert former Panthers front office or coach moron* knows best and we're all just idiots. This forum exists to discuss Panthers football and that includes *GASP* sharing opinions that may be contrary to what the Panthers end up doing.  If you just want a circle jerk of an echo chamber reassuring you that everything the Panthers do is brilliant despite the abysmal record on the field, I think they made a Discord group for that.
