Should we have let D-will walk

  1. 1. Should we have let Deangelo Williams leave via free agency last year?

Winner winner chicken dinner

But it is easier just to paint me as a blind Williams hater. Ignoring what Carolina did sets the table for a great RB in his prime to walk....leaving us with a 30 yr old RB (who while is a great pure runner) just doesn't fit ideally what we do.

That doesn't hold water at all. Williams contract was just the next step to the contract that Jackson got in 2008 which was a 6 year 44 million contract with 20 million guaranteed. Apparently Jackson is unhappy about his contract and wants to renegotiate.

Every year the contracts for current player build on the contracts from the year or two before. Now it is Forte and the year before it was Chris Johnson who got a 4 year extension with the new money being 13.5 million a year. And the Johnson contract was for a guy who didn't even work through his rookie contract. Williams not only worked through his rookie contract but then did the RFA tender contract with no complaints. Getting his deal was simply payment for outworking his rookie deal plus paying him a premium to stay with a 2-14 team and not test free agency.

People seem to forget that it has been rumored that we did try and sign Stewart at the same time we offered a contract to Williams. He didn't want to negotiate at that point so we signed Williams and brought in Tolbert. It has only been recently that Stewart says he wants too stay. If that is true, then why didn't he accept the offer we apparently gave him????

How is it a lack ot "real players" when we dont know if they're good OR bad. You gotta give young guys time, nobody comes in all-pro.

So I guess when San Francisco won 6 games in 2010 they didn't have good players but now that they went 13-3 in 2011, they have great players. That could be us this year.

Had to go to the second page to find the thread.

First, Since CRA has issues reading (yet frequents the huddle), Stew is gonna get paid.

Chances are, he'll remain a Panther, much to your own dismay. I expect him to be the more productive back over the next several years. Never know though.

As far as the "what if he goes to another team..."

That's the NFL. It won't be the first time that a fan favorite moves on, it certainly won't be the last. Most fans blame Hurney when this happens (witherspoon sp??), but it's just nature of the beast.

Knowing the Panthers take care of their own, and always offer more than fair contracts to their players, you still think the chances of him leaving are higher than him staying. That flies against conventional thinking/common sense.

Oh, and FYI, it was reported earlier in the offseason that the Panthers and Stews agent have already been talking. There is no rusb though.

RR has stated several times that DT wasn't a priority and by his actions, he believes that to be the case.

CB- we just drafted, Norman this year and Hogan, last year( basically a rookie) then we have Cap and Butler. Our #2 and our nickback will come from this group.

S- They brought in Smith and Nakamura to compete for the job and drafted Campbell for added depth.

DE- behind CJ and Hardy you got Alexander who we just drafted, Tucker FA, you also have Applewhite and Kaiser for extra depth (left a few off).

So again WHO and WHAT positions?

Lol you just brought up a bunch of unproven guys to justify spending a huge chunk of cash to keep someone so he can split time at one position with two other guys that can start.

we made the right move by keeping him. knock on wood - the durability to this point of Stewart, but I don't think the FO believes he can carry the load for an entire season. All of his 4 previous seasons, he has had to miss training camp time and practices throughout regular seasons for nagging injuries - which also suggests he probably plays thru pain every year. Couple that with a rookie QB, RB's are their best friends. They have good chemistry together, and the right move was made.

The point wasn't whether these were proven guys but whether we had depth at a number of positions. Also most times injuries at running back are more common than at cornerback, for example, necessitating the need for greater depth with the capacity to start at that position.

I brought up a bunch of guys that we've drafted and brought in through FA...the guys that we are going with. That's what this organization does. Build through the draft and bring in mid level FAs... so if youre waiting on them to spend that money on top level FAs, don't hold your breath.

Yea our current strategy seems to be working so far with our inability to stop the pass since 2006 and no playoff wins in 6 seasons

Yea, and just who was our Franchise QB through those years? Saying we are a losing Franchise lately is true, but blaming it on having two quality RBs is just silly.

We have been in rebuilding mode basically since Jake left. Do you think it is a coinky dinky that our ills started when our QB fell apart? No Franchise QB=hard to win consistently.

Every year you get better. But you can build all you want. Until you have a Franchise QB you will struggle.
