Charlotte could amnesty Diop tomorrow

You're correct, the only reason to amnesty Diop is to free up more cap space so that we can throw more money at Landry or Humphries; otherwise this would be a dumb move (being that he is already in the last year of his contract) when they could just use the cap space (in a pretty good free agent class) next year and not have to pay him anything.

If the Cats amnesty Diop, they will have two roster spots to fill rather than one.

Not a dumb move. That would be one of the best offseason move for us if Diop gets amnesty. I dnt think Diop will ever land another job after us.

I was all over the Bobcats amnestying Thomas earlier, but now seeing the style we want to play and having a coach that may be able to break through to him I now hope we keep him for at least another year and see if Dunlap can get as much or more than Larry Brown did.

Unfortunately, his poo contract is going to eat us up if he doesn't come around. If there is a chance to get a solid PF and we have to amnesty Diop to do it than great, get ir done.

Are expiring contracts not worth as much as they used to be? I would imagine a 1 year 7 million dollar contract would be valuable in a trade with team trying to shed some cap room, as long as we take a longer contract back. But at the end of the day we could always amnesty them in the offseason, and enjoy the 1st round pick that would likely come back to us in the trade.

Still, if you're a team that won't be a playoff contender this year then why wouldn't you just keep the contract and let it expire and have that money for FA next year. What happens if you use the amnesty on Diop and then find out in December that Tyrus can't play anymore? Then you're stuck with scrub who has a 2 year toxic contract, when you could have just let Diop ride it out, and then amnestied Tyrus next off season.....

You can't amnesty a player you trade for...

Only reason I could think they want to amnesty Diop now is if they plan on using the cap space in a trade during the season (since I dont think you can amnesty players mid-season). A team over the luxury tax could dump salary near the deadline on us to avoid paying the tax for example.

Other than that, I dont see the logic in making this move now since it wont save us money and its not worth it to sign a guy like Humphries

Two incredibly conflicting reasons you don't amnesty Tyrus.

1. He is the scar of the Jordan-ran Bobcats. Until he is gone, MJ will have someone to look at on his roster that he gave up a 1st round pick for (and later re-signed) that has never lived up to expectations. He will be Cho's reason for saying: "I am running the show now".

2. He cracks the mold and becomes a role on a team that might have to wait for a super-star. MJ saves face and the pick we lose doesn't really make the difference.

In a perfect world, you hold off on using the amnesty this offseason, Tyrus shows some flashes of talent in Dunlap's new system, and then the bobcats can amnesty Thomas this summer and other teams actually make an offer for his last 2 years and the team saves some money

It is a dumb move, a very dumb move. Cap space doesn't carry over in the NBA. We would have $10 million dollars in cap for this year with most of the good free agents are gone.

If we don't amnesty Diop, we can save that $7,372,000 million dollars in cap space for next year.
