Rivera isn't the one who drafted 2 1st round RBs in 3 yrs.....so I don't think it is fair to assume it is his idea to pay 2 1st round RBs featured RB money in a 3 yr span if it occurs.

This whole thing was setup prior to Rivera.

Teams are not building themselves like that in this passing league....nothing suggests Ron, who was willing to live or die with Cam, when he could of played it safe is of that mindset.

So he didn't have anything to do with Williams contract??? He wasn't the coach when Williams signed???

And you really believe that when we drafted Cam he didn't think about the running game and using him to develop that?? I guess the fact he was in San Diego as a defensive coach while LT was there had no bearing on what he has seen or believes??

What other GMs think has to do with what is important overall in today's game....

I never said we would sign a high priced FA if CJ or Gamble went down......but being so comically thin and weak in certain areas means we would bring in a couple "Ron Edwards" type guys.

Next man up doesn't work at all positions that well.....especially important ones where you don't even have a starter at the opposite side.

That money is insurance....sitting to see if something bad happens.

What other GMs do is tangentially related to us from a parity or contractually point of view. But from a philosophy point of view it doesn't mean anything. In fact the argument could be made that with defenses going to quicker smaller defenders to account for passing offenses, drafting road graders and beefing up the run game produces more mismatches than doing what everyone else does.

And again Rivera thinks we are not weak or thin, in fact he thinks we are deep. Look at how many receivers we are bringing to camp- 15. How many DEs- 5 with 3 more linebacker tweeners (8 total), DT- 7, DBs- 11 Now go back and look at how many have had some starting experience.

Receivers- 5

DEs- 4

DBs-9

Just saying we have no depth doesn't make it true.

That money won't be needed given that practice squad players who we would be bringing in are paid by the week at 1/17 of the rookie minimum per week, which is about 20,000 a week. Or guys are brought in for a partial payment for what is left in the year.

As for next man up, I guess that given that is the mantra that Rivera preached all last year was a total fallacy and working out the backups and rotating them into the lineup to gain experience was totally wasted, right??

Its a passing league guyz.. didn't you know?!?! How many playoff teams last season didnt invest in a strong run game?...two? NE and GB. Giants weren't great, but they did depend on it to open up the pass. They also invested a 1st to fix that situation.

The Giants and New Orleans both ran the ball over 40% of the time. So it isn't as if they didn't need a good running game. When you have Eli and Brady you can get by with an ok running game. But how many Brady's are out there. Not sure it applies to us.

Run game sucked....and they won the Superbowl. There actually have been a lot of 32nd ranked passing teams male the Superbowl in recent history. No number 1 ranked rushing teams.

And yes, you want balance....and now they have a CHEAP addition to get them balanced again.

And how many number 1 passing teams have won the Superbowl in recent history?? You have to go back all the the 1999 Rams who lead the league in the regular season and then won the Superbowl in 2000?? Before the NFL became a passing league...................

Sorry, but you can't pin the mass wave of contracts Hurney gave out on Rivera....

Hurney was cleaning up a mess Hurney, JR, and Fox created.

and yeah, people seem to imply without Williams...Cam and company wouldn't of had a 25 year old stud and 1st rounder named Stewart to lean on......which is better than what most teams in the league have.

Seems silly yo try to compare the Elway era to today's game....rules have made it a different game. Much different one than since we made a Superbowl appearance.

Out of curiosity, what Packer team are you refering to? The recent one with the Grant injury?

And yes, Hurney extended Williams when Ron walked in the door. That isn't really a Ron move now is it....what happens with Stewart Ron will have a bigger influence on

Williams was extended by Hurney and Rivera because we expected to need time for newton to develop. Plain and simple. Stewart has recently said he wants to be here. I wonder why he has been rumored to have turned down the contract we offered him when we signed Williams.

If Hurney asks Rivera whether he wants Stewart,I am sure he will say of course. The money and desire for Stewart to actually be here will be the deciding factors.

Who pinned it on Rivera. As I said in the thread above, if you ask the coach he will tell you he wants all the talent he has and more. It the GMs job to sign him. The coach's job is to do the best he can with what he is given. All I said is that I am sure Rivera was in favor of keeping Williams.

And again last I heard, Stewart turned down the contract offer. I wasn't a choice between Williams and Stewart when we signed Williams so why do you describing it as one. It was Williams or not Williams. We still don't know if we can sign Stewart at any price. he says he wants to be here but that is the politically correct thing all players say. It doesn't mean it works out that way,.

Everyone knows that what you do in the regular season simply gets you in the playoffs which could be a good offense or defense or both. What wins superbowls is peaking in the playoffs and getting on a run. Whether you have a number 5 passing game and a 20th running game or a 12th passing game and 12 running game doesn't matter. The only stats that matter really is points for versus points against. If you look at the best teams they are obviously teams that can either limit other teams to fewer points or ones that can outscore the opponent. It doesn't really matter how you do it. Most teams stress passing because it is easier to develop. But that doesn't mean that if you have a great running team you should abandon it.
