FA projected losses over next 2 years

Recommended Posts

Actually we had 118 million in cap space guaranteed for next year with 43 signed. It didn't include Smith.

And Cam has a 4 year contract with a 5th year option so we are at least 3 if not 4 years away from having to resign Cam.

Carolina isn't going to let Cam get that far into his deal without extending him.....they likely give him a new deal in 2 yrs or so.

Yeah...I said before we extended Steve. That means he didn't count towards next years cap...

Cam can extend his contract following the 3rd season. The sooner you resign him to a long term deal, the less leverage he has. If you wait until the 5th year he will have all the power in negotiations and command a ridiculous contract. Extending him early at a lower rate is a win for both parties as cam will make diddly poo his 4th year. Imagine a scenario like this: Cam resigns following the 2013 season, he then wins the Super Bowl following the 2014 season. He is already locked up, he has no leverage to command over $20m a year.

We made cap room this year by pushing some money into later years. Hurney will be cutting and restructuring for years to come. Not everyone is safe.

Honestly Cam will have leverage whenever he get resigned. There is no reason to sign him before year 4 and it makes sense to exercise the 5th year option and resign him after that year. The only way you would have leverage with him would be if he has a poor year and I don't think that will happen. Every one knows he is going to break the bank when he gets resigned whenever that is.

Why?? Extending him 2 years before you have to only makes sense if you tear up his old contract and give him a new one and that will cost us 20 to 40 million more than if we wait. It isn't as if there is any reason to sign him early. He knows that he is going to break the bank when he gets resigned.

There is a big difference between a promising young pro bowler and a league/Superbowl MVP. If Cam was a FA right now, he would not get Drew Brees money. As every year goes by and the accolades pile up he will join that class.

The leverage is his salary. He will make something like $6m his 4th year. The 5th year option raises his salary to average of the top 5 QBs in the league. It's sort of a mini Franchise tag if you will. By the 5th year he will have less to gain by resigning in terms of 5th year earnings.

Trust me he isn't going to give any hometown discounts or making deals to get signed early. Unless he was going to take less(which he won't) to get signed early, then it makes no sense for the Panthers to sign him early. Do you really think Cam is going to take 30 million less to sign year 4 versus playing year 4, taking the 18 million year 5 option and then in the 20s when he resigns.

Too late already. He has done unprecedented things and would be asking 16-18 million if we were signing him to a new contract right now. If it weren't for the rookie cap, he would have made close to 80 million on a 5 year deal last year.

You are operating under the assumption he is a $20m a year quarterback. He is not, yet. Drew Brees has won the SuperBowl, won offensive player of the year twice, made 6 pro bowls, 4 all pros, broken multiple NFL passing records, and made the playoffs 3 straight seasons. Cam has won 6 games, made one pro bowl as an alternate and broke some rookie records. He is not a $20m a year guy and may never be.

When Cam hits year 4 he will be looking at something like $6m for the season. He can take that or resign with a $20-25m signing bonus at maybe $16-17 a year and be locked in for another 5 years. If he waits until year 5.....it's like Steve always says, "you're just one play away".

No I am making the assumption that he already feels that he gave up 60 million because there was a rookie cap and every one before him who went number 1 broke the bank on their first contract. He is surely going to believe that he should break the bank the second time around.

And if you think he is going to take 20-25 million guaranteed and 16 to 17 million a year, you are totally out in left field. He has made the pro bowl in the only season he has played and broke every rookie record. The only way he get paid what you suggest is if he sucks for the next couple of years. Could that happen?? It could but I prefer to think that he even plays better this year, leads us to the playoffs and by year 4 has a superbowl win as well. Will it happen?? Who knows but instead of hoping to sign him on the cheap, I hope he totally outplays his contract, brings home a Lombardi and demands a ton of money because he is worth every penny just like Brees was.

What does Sam Bradford's contract have to do with anything? Sam Bradford doesn't set the market value for QBs. If the NFL had Amnesty the Rams would have cut him and drafted RG3.

Did you not read what I quoted, or are you having problems making connections? There was an argument about how much Cam Newton would make if he were on the market right now, and you only have to look at Russell, Stafford, and Bradford's contracts to understand what extremely young and potentially talented quarterbacks were making. Newton, meanwhile, has shown he does in fact have talent. He had what I believe to be the best rookie QB season ever.

No, Sam Bradford doesn't set the market for anything, but you'd have to be stupid if you didn't think his contract numbers aren't looked at by QBs who sign new deals in the same way Manning and Brady set the market, Brees (and soon Rodgers and Stafford AGAIN) will re-set the market, and Cam Newton will potentially set as well for Andrew Luck.

Surely I didn't have to sit here and explain that to you, but apparently I did.
