The bad news is this will be the starting point of negotiations when Cam's contract is up for renewal.

What's the track record for the whole "pay one great player huge money and skimp everywhere else" strategy as far as championships go?

My sense is that it's not very good at all.

most of that is signing bonus that is prorated over the life of the contract. it's $60 million guaranteed which will have a cap hit spread evenly over five years no matter how much the Saints* pay out early on. his base salary is probably relatively small in the early stages of the contract but likely gets insane in the final years.

1. Brees was always going to be re-signed despite everyone's wet dream hoping otherwise.

2. Newton won't be signed for another few seasons. Just wait until we see Rodgers' contract and Stafford's probably being redone by then. Obviously it's going to cost a lot to have an amazing quarterback. It's not science.

So yeah, not very important to spam on the main forum all offseason. Good to see it in here though, where it rightfully belongs.
