Jonathan Stewart article on PFT.

Keep Pounding

I would agree. Unless Newton has no other option accept to scramble for his life. The panthers should not risk him on doing stupid option plays. Cam goes down. Then our who season goes bye bye. We got more then enough firepower in the backfield now with Dwill, Stewart, and Tolbert. Use them this year. It would ok to use Cam in an option play once again. But beyond that it is risky his career every time. They need to use the RBs alot more this year.

Cam Newton isn't a pure pocket passer....his wheels a part of his game. It also is what makes him a mismatch the league has NEVER seen. He may be the greatest goaline threat in NFL history when all is said and done....

Carolina should use the RBs more this year but that doesn't mean you remove Cam from the ground attack. He was one of the most efficient runners in all the NFL and easily the best in Carolina.

Take away Newton's legs this early in his career and you sabatoge his career. That doesn't mean you can't be smart with him....but his legs also help him in the pass game. Not just extending plays but setting up the deep stuff. He will never be a Peyton Manning type.

Steve Smith, Mike Tolbert.

Steve Smith didnt give us a hometown discount. Tolbert wasn't a Panther last year.....him moving his family back home isn't a "hometown discount"....which means giving your current team a break to stay bc of your past.

steve smith restructured. contrary to popular belief, that's not the same as giving up money.

tolbert giving carolina a discount is the same as stewart giving a discount...to sign with seattle.

Steve Smith Accepted less money than what most TOP WR in the League get ,to remain a Panther.

Tolbert took less money to be a Panther. Those are facts. Spin it however you like...they could've got more money elsewhere.

Lets lay to rest this whole none of the rest of his contract is guaranteed crap so there is no problem. William's guaranteed money has been paid but the cap cost has not been accounted for. If he is cut before the 2013 season the remaining cap cost of his signing bonus will escalate and it will cost us 9,600,000. If we do it after June 1, it will cost us 4,800,000 in 2013 and another 4,800,000 in 2014. All in dead cap space.

Which gives Williams leverage.....to not restructure and make the most out the deal he JUST signed and spent his career working towards.

A hometown discount doesn't involve going to another team.....Yeah, technically he did give his home area team one but that isn't what the phrase means.

Steve Smith didnt take less money. While a top WR....his age and history isn't going to give him the same earning potential as a Calvin Johnson.

Carolina has been VERY good to Smitty. Nothing supports him settling for less to benefit the franchise

Like I said, they both could've gotten more money elsewhere... you can spin it however you want. If its not a "hometown" discount, then its just a discount....what a big difference.

Tolbert could of gotten more....

It isn't spin....the meaning of a hometown discount means giving your CURRENT team a break not going home.

How could Smitty of gotten more? Did you miss the 2010 season? Probably could of traded him for a 3rd rounder and another team gotten a steal......

Yeah, I seen the 2010 season. I also seen the 2011 season... you know, his last contract year. If he wanted more money, he could've left in FA and he would've gotten it.

You aren't buying it is a passing league and rosters are being built to follow?

Cant have it all. Need a great D to go with Cam.

Cam+ half Double Trouble + Tolbert = easily the potential for the best ground attack in the NFL. What team with THAT is looking to spend dollars an another elite RB with holes all over the roster

no. i know it's happening. i've talked a lot about it in here and bitched about the coaching staff we had that was totally oblivious to it and had dug their heels in the ground totally resistant to change.

i think we need to be looking beyond current trends and i think that is what this team is doing with the cast of players they have. i don't think the key to being the best is trying to copy what everyone else is doing. it's taking what they do and spinning it to something else or doing something different that others will want to copy.

we can have a passing attack that is as good as anyone's with the cast that we have and imo, we do have it. i don't see why we can't keep it. i think it's feasible cap-wise and i don't think that something that will interfere with the progression and improvement in all areas of the game, including defense. i don't think we are all that far away from having a top 10 defense and that is without much more added to the roster than what is already here. i don't think that whatever additions are needed will be hurt by what we do or don't do with williams and stewart.

Cam+ half Double Trouble + Tolbert = easily the potential for the best ground attack in the NFL.

but cam + double trouble + tobert = easily the best ground attack in the NFL. i see no reason to change that grouping if the team can continue to grow and improve without breaking that up. i certainly don't see that being something that holds us back...not even on defense.

I don't see Stew going anywhere when the time is right something will get done. And beside I have a feeling D-Will is going to restructure his contract to keep Stew here since he's gotten the guaranteed money aka signing bonus!

All restructuring does is push some of his salary to later years by converting it to a signing bonus and paying it up front. That just increases the amount of the signing bonus money we owe him each year. It can help for a specific year but won't do anything if the cap stays at the current amount for the next several years.

If we wanted to get rid of him we would have traded him by now. Obviously we plan to keep him and have figured out how we are going to sign him. At this point we could simply use the 6 million in cap space we currently have by pushing it to next year.
