Jonathan Stewart article on PFT.

Keep Pounding

Recommended Posts

Will Stew want more money than DWIll's contract?

The difficult part of keeping Stewart is going to be the five-year, $43 million deal that the team signed DeAngelo Williams to before last season. Matching the Williams deal would make it tough for the Panthers to keep both players and Stewart has a decent argument that he deserves a bigger deal based on 2011 and the expected trajectory for the future. Stewart played 55 percent of the snaps last season and Williams rarely saw action in the red zone, trends that don’t figure to change now that Tolbert is in town as well.

“We’re good. There’s no reason I would want to leave as of now,” Stewart said to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “That being said, I’m a Panther and I intend on being one.”

I don't think Stewart will be here next year, unless we tag him and he might even hold out. Im just reading between the lines. I could be wrong. I know we overpaid to keep Williams. But who thinks Stewart could get a bigger contract than DWILL's somewhere else?

I'm not sure they'll give him that sort of money, especially if Dwill continues to show he's still a starting caliber running back, and if Mike Tolbert can be a force in short yardage situations and passing downs.

It's so easy to find another running back these days, especially with the NFL becoming a passing league. You just need to draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round and pair him with Tolbert after Dwill leaves in a couple of seasons and you won't even notice the difference. Tolbert is going to be that much of a game changer, I'm telling you.

I love Stewart and I hope we can get him to stay, but I definitely won't panic when he hits the free agent market.

The other thing that you can count on more than anything else.

Money Rules the NFL

That is what makes me believe that he wants to test FA to see what other teams value him at. But I look at Forte is will play under the tag this year for around 7 Million.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2012/06/matt_forte_says_prolonged_cont.html

"Market value, that's basically what I'm talking about," Forte said. "There have been a lot of running backs that have been in my position that have signed, LeSean McCoy and Arian Foster. There's an area that we need to deal from, and we all know what that area is. It's just a matter of doing it."

McCoy just signed a five-year, $45 million deal with just more than $20 million guaranteed. Foster signed a five-year, $43.5 million deal with $20.75 million guaranteed.

With Williams 43 million contract and what McCoy and Foster got. Stewart will want something that those two got or more. But Stewart hasn't been a premiere back, not saying that he can't. But he certainly thinks he deserves that kind of money.

he'll be around for a lot longer and it won't be the big deal so many think it will be. contract will still be huge, but it won't stop this team's progression.

mountain will still be made out of that molehill, though.

Is there ANYWAY D-will could become trade-able?

After this season, none of the three years and $18 million remaining on Williams' is guaranteed. With Williams turning 30 next April, the Panthers could release the older back and go with Stewart, who doesn't turn 26 until next March.

Maaaaaaaaaybe Hurney knew what he was doing afterall?

at that point, it's not all that difficult to give stewart a new contract and keep williams around...esp. if williams restructures (which won't really be necessary to keep both around but could happen anyway if williams wants to keep the team together).

#28 aint going anywhere, the current FO has always placed high value on RB's.

Don't need an expensive backfield. Game has changed. Use the money elsewhere. Without Stewart we can still be the best ground attack in the NFL. We suck at many many spots.

About building the best team....not bragging that we have better RBs than others clapping from the bench. Best way to help Cam is to build him a stud D.

    • With a night to sleep on it I'm now firmly of the opinion that we keep letting Bryce improve the rest of the season and enter next years camp with 2 new additions to the QB room. One being a new veteran and the other being another rookie QB we can bring along slowly. If Bryce's ceiling is game manager so be it. In that instance it will be majorly beneficial to the team as a whole to have another QB waiting in the wings and use the other as trade bait. But we've got to be smart about this and think ahead. I cannot stress enough that we cannot again sit on our hands with the most important position. Meanwhile we've also been continuing to build up the rest of the roster in the meantime. Then maybe we will be ready to compete for the division and a playoff spot. That is the best path forward for this franchise given where we are and the mistakes we've made that should serve as a learning tool of what not to do.
