Whats the deal with Cam charging for Autographs today?

should he have broken his contract so that we'd see "diva second year quarterback cam newton refuses to honor autograph session agreement" in the headlines?

No one would have crucified him for refusing to do any of these gigs if he did it because of principles. In fact, it probably would have endeared him to his fans even more.

People need to stop insinuating that people are overreacting when there is no overreaction...just a little distaste, which should be totally understandable.

I have read most of the responses here and wow most of you have no idea what the hell your talking about.

1st. Sports memorabilia is a multi million dollar business all NFL players sign stickers and football cards for large sums of money and they do this before they ever play a down in the NFL or attend a training camp.

2nd, Cam didn't invent this concept he is not the 1st nor will he be the last NFL player at any year of experience to have a signing that charges money.

3rd. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!! The HATE ON CAM FOR THIS???? SERIOUSLY???? WTF?!!! and why are so many people here jealous of people that can afford these autos that you have to talk sh#t about them? Sorry you cant afford it so don't hate on the ones that can, It's my money.

This is what it will look like so many players in the NFL has done this one time or another....

America was fuged up in so many ways when I was coming up, but, then again, it was better in so many ways than it is today.

Damn if I'd pay him to sign anything for me. I like him and glad that he's the quarterback for our team but outside of that he's just another man to me. As long as he wears a Panther uniform...I'll cheer for him for free.

IMG probably wouldn't have been too happy with the situation seeing as to how they'd be getting stiffed out of several thousand dollars of revenue. breach of contract is a serious thing.

Yes, break a contract....................... don't charge for your sig.

then get sued for it and lose in court or pay out for the lost revenue depending on whether his contract has an event cancellation clause. also ignore the countless other athletes who sign on with memorabilia companies and appear at similar events.

why do people think athletes owe them warm fuzzies? he's signed a trillion free autographs. if he ducked out because the winds of public perception kind of gently blew against him then that's no more honorable than just doing the damn thing in the first place.

every legendary QB in the last 20 years has done a private signings that you have to pay a fee for hell Brett Favre does it on his own and has his own C.O.A hologram.

Certificate of Authenticity.

You can see how young our team and fan base is when they get upset over something silly like this other teams and fans have been doing this forever. I hope this thread disappears cause this is embarrassing.

you can just tell that this fanbase isn't used to having an A-list star player. steve smith is the closest we've ever come and even then wide receiver is hardly the biggest "face time" position around. maybe julius peppers as well on a good day but he literally left town partly because he didn't like that.

there was a thread a while back where a few people were going apeshit because cam was making a paid appearance at a club opening. granted that dumbass troll with the paula deen gimmick that's thankfully banned now created it but there were several people in an outright moral panic.

Let's take that $175 for a signed jersey. If you just randomly got a jersey signed by somebody and then wanted to get some form of official certification for that signature, then you're looking at about $100 for the jersey (according to the nfl.com shop for a well known player) and then another $25-50 for certification. So for an extra $50 or so, you get the garauntee of the autograph and instant certification of it's authenticity, plus a meet and greet and possible photo-op with the player.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
