Cats may reach out to Haywood and Sessions

LAS VEGAS – Ramon Sessions and Brendan Haywood could end addressing the Charlotte Bobcats’ needs at point guard and center, the Observer has learned.

Sessions, an unrestricted free agent who finished last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, has drawn interest from the Bobcats, an informed source said. Haywood, a center who grew up in Greensboro and played for North Carolina, will reportedly be waived by the Dallas Mavericks under the NBA’s amnesty clause.

The Mavericks will swallow the remaining $35 million on Haywood’s salary in order to sign free-agent center Chris Kaman. That would open the door for the Bobcats to offer a homecoming and likely a starting spot. Haywood often spends the off-season in Charlotte, working out frequently at Time Warner Cable Arena.

All that could make sign-and-trade discussions between the Bobcats and Indiana Pacers moot. If the Bobcats strike deals with Sessions and eventually Haywood, it’s possible their best course would be rescinding a qualifying offer of about $4 million to point guard D.J. Augustin, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Regardless of the machinations, it seems unlikely Augustin will continue to be a Bobcat long-term. He turned down a lucrative contract extension last season and the Bobcats considered moving him at the trade deadline.

Augustin was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2008 draft. The Bobcats chose him over now-Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez. The Bobcats were prepared to pursue Lopez vigorously this week had the Nets not offered him a maximum, four-year contract.

Sessions averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists last season with the Lakers after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s known as a capable penetrator, but a suspect jump-shooter. He’d likely back up Kemba Walker, who new coach Mike Dunlap is grooming in an up-tempo offense in Charlotte.

Center Haywood started 54 of 66 games last season for the Mavericks after they did not retain Tyson Chandler in free-agency. Haywood averaged 5.2 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.

The Bobcats need another big man, and particularly a center, since Byron Mullens, Bismack Biyombo and Tyrus Thomas might all be better suited to power forward.

It’s also possible the Bobcats could add another power forward. They were in the mix to end up with free agent Kris Humphries from the Nets, via sign-and-trade, in a complex deal to land Magic center Dwight Howard in Brooklyn. All that collapsed Wednesday when the Nets chose to re-sign Lopez and retain him at least in the near future.

I have said before that I prefer Biz at the power forward spot but you have to go by what Dunlap is thinking and right now he may want Biz at the center position.

And that's is why I started to give you credit for some of your Opinions. You've learned something in that school.

Bismack is better suited for center even though he is undersized. I don't understand why that is so hard for people to see. Also, I'll be mad if we go after Sessions and Haywood. It's the same old crappy players the bobcats always get. It's not like they have any future or upside. I'm tired of getting these types of players. No need to waste money on them. Just sign some people off the street or off the summer league squad and roll with it. Let's just focus on our young players and stop bringing in players that add no value whatsoever

Maybe because he is best suited for being a PF and you don't know poo about Basketball.

Haven't read through the whole pissing contest, but I'm tired of seeing this argument.

Think about this... If Smack was better suited to be a PF, why was he so successful against Dwight this year? Just think about it.

He's still young and not even 20 yet. So, it pisses me off when people say, "he can't play C, he's better suited at PF." It makes no sense. The dude is long enough, strong enough, and has all of the ability it requires to play C and will only bulk up as he matures. I'm so tired of reading this crap. Who made these unwritten rules with no true criteria?

When his fellow countryman Ibaka came in, he was playing PF and I imagine people were saying the same stupid crap. Well, what does he do now?

Oh, and I can only see us getting Sessions. Haywood seems kind of douchey and I expect him to sign with a contender before signing with us for the vet minimum. Not unless he finds playing for a loser with his old college teammate too good to pass up.

    • I was going to say the Dak Prescott scramble a few years ago in the playoffs that ran out the clock before getting one final shot at the end zone. But what happened at the end of the Bears game is a new level of incompetence. Made even worse in that the Bears used two timeouts on that final drive after the prior play was an incomplete pass. That and it sounds like Eberflus tried putting some of the blame on Caleb only for Caleb to indicate he doesn't have the capability to call timeouts and that he waited 20 seconds for him to get that playcall.  My goodness, the game ended when they still had a timeout in their pocket. I can't recall a similar situation like that ever happening.
    • Those are all good guesses.  I wonder if they include incomplete passes, where it isn't on the QB.  I wish they'd publish what the big time passes were. It's helpful to learn their methods. Thanks for checking for us
